One of those ones that I had on Media's BETA tape and haven't seen since. Definitely the other big surprise Criterion of the announcements!

I asked Fun City about this after they released Heartbreakers, they told me they asked for it, but it was was with another label. I never imagined it would be Criterion.

Thrilled to see this! So many more Alan Rudolph films deserve a good release.

Hopefully this will be a start of Criterion and Rudolph. Perhaps The Moderns in 4k and the issues figured out for Remember My Name.

Day one.

Let's welcome John Larroquette (Schrader's Cat People, TV's Night Court) to the Criterion Collection.

Is this the first Criterion to feature a Commodore 64? (used at Dr. Love's radio station.)

Recently I sent a revised dream list to Criterion with "Choose Me" and "Paper Moon" near the top. Never thought either would happen, certainly not by Christmas. This is great news for Alan Rudolph fans. Thank you, Criterion.

I saw "Choose Me" when it came out and was charmed enough to see it twice. But the vibe was sooo early '80s indie L.A., I didn't expect it to age well. It was a surprise to revisit it on DVD and discover it hadn't aged a bit. Was wondering why a blu-ray wasn't forthcoming. The only things that date it now are corded phones and lack of internet search engines. And to be honest, movie plots have suffered since the invention of cell phones. Miscommunication drove the plots of all the classics.

I love "The Moderns," too. Its blu-ray is serviceable. But the blu of "Afterglow" is a travesty, esp. given the presence of Julie Christie, the screen's most photogenic actor. And the score has one of the best jazz soundtracks ever -- Charles Lloyd jamming with Geri Allen, Gary Burton, Mark Isham, Billy Higgins and Sid Page. Pure sonic bliss.

I had never heard of this movie until Criterion announced they were releasing it. I looked it up and found that it is available on YouTube, and decided to check it out.

This was an incredibly pleasant treat. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an influence on 'Chungking Express', it's got that same smoky late night, restless, idiosyncratic vibe.

I also just have a love for movies about talk radio such as 'Talk Radio' and 'Pump Up the Volume'. I love talking on the phone in real life, I find it's incredibly intimate to just have two voices disembodied from self-consciousness and inhibition. In films it always gives actors good opportunities to flex their skills in dialogue driven scenes.

This movie definitely got in my heart and stayed in my head. I'll probably pick up the disc sooner rather than later.

I posted about this 4 years ago... and now the Big C is releasing it... kinda like washing your car to make it rain? Except it took 4 years... sigh...

Criterion is groovy for me for the beginning of next year. This AND one of my faves, "Crossing Delancey."

@albabe “The Characters are really interesting and virtually every Actor gets to be a little odd. Keith Carradine, Lesley Ann Warren, and Geneviève Bujold are all great in their Roles, but I love John Larrochet in his minor part.”

It was my good fortune to meet Patrick Bauchau at a wrap party and discover he was nothing like his character in “Choose Me.” Friendly, engaging and a major movie trivia buff. At the time I was unaware he’d been the star of an Eric Rohmer picture. Cool dude indeed.

I thought the transfer looks great. IMO better looking than the month’s other releases, Night Moves and Thief.- I just wasn’t wowed by their image quality. I’ll need to see some screen comparisons.

Choose Me has a lovely thick appearance and nice grain.

I haven’t seen the film since the old DVD so this has to be a drastic image quality difference. 4K worthy for sure. So nice Criterion took a chance on it for the format.

So.... 11 days 'till it's released... and no one has got a Screener?

My wife used to "Act" and Teach, mostly Shakespeare, and she keeps up her SAG-AFTRA membership... and we get to see most everything that was nominated for awards... a lot of stuff that isn't out yet, like "Complete Unknown." I always assumed the Reviewers here got Screeners for stuff like Choose Me?
