Default Quick Movie Scene question

Hi All,

This might seem either like a dumb or weird question. I recently got a blu-ray player and I love it. The one thing that got me into Blu-ray was a demo playing at Best Buy, which someone mentioned in this thread:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=29295

Now I will admit, the look is what got me into Blu-ray. Now at home, I notice that watching any blu-ray movie, some scenes seem like I saw in bestbuy, then others are not. If that doesn't make sense, best example I can give is with Casino Royale.

I was watching that last night, and while the PQ blew me away, I noticed near more the end of the movie, the film seemed more like the bestbuy display, while earlier in the movie, it didn't.

Is this a common thing with the movies? Is there maybe something wrong with my TV? Or is it just some scenes are going to look better then others.

Thanks all for clearing up any confusion.

The displays that you see at the stores are some of the best are tweeked to the max and the demo disc that you see was created just to show off that tv's picture.

In store TV's often have ther contrast ratio set to high, home watching levels will vary a lot.

Hopefully that clears up some confusion.

Casino Royal is one of the better looking and sounding Blu's

Movies are generally limited by the Bandwidth/Bitrate/disk-space of the transfer. Sometimes, where space or Bitrate is an issue, the studio uses higher compression earlier in the movie, and saves up space for when the movie really takes off. Therefore the big climax of the movie is less compressed, and looks better.

They save up space for the climax or end of the movie because that is when PQ and AQ really matter the most.

Someone with more technical experience can explain this better than me. But generally speaking, if we had unlimited space on the disk, every frame would look just as good as the climax of the film. Blu-Ray has tonnes of space, and even the worst PQ will rival the best from DVD, but it is still limited slightly. A good quality HDTV can't help but show you the difference.

The same thing has to go for shooting the movie, they save their money for the big scenes
