what I just posted on the newspost about it:
"Just watched it, really liked it, came here to see when the bluray is out. Going in, people need to know it's a horror comedy, with probably more emphasis on the latter, but still with some nice horror elements - at least in terms of gore and suspense (some jump scares but not super-effective with them, for me.) What it actually reminded me of was The 'Burbs, crossed with say Drag Me To Hell (although not as good as either, but I mean..yeah) For my tastes I would've rathered a little less silliness (or maybe if the silliness had been a bit bloodier or gross-out/horrrific, ala drag me to hell), and the script could've been bitey-er (there were moments that could've been capitalised on better), but I'm looking forward to maybe seeing it with other people to see their reactions. Another movie it made me think of was You're Next, but I found that one a letdown after so much hype and think this is a better, cleverer, even twistier film" I wonder if there'll be a different Aussie or NZ release, and when that'll be etc..Nothing on jbhifi website yet |

![]() ![]() I discovered Housebound at London Frightfest and it's by far my favourite horror film of the year. I'm not always a huge fan of horror comedies as they generally fall into neither camp, not being particularly scary or funny. What I like about Housebound is that it is first and foremost a horror film where the comedy develops out of the situations and characters, rather than being a horror film with jokes crafted on or a parody. The performances are fantastic all round. Morgana O'Reilly as Kylie is one tough cookie of a scream queen. After participating in a failed ATM robbery she gets sentenced to eight months house arrest at her mother's rambling country house, which her mother believes to be haunted. The fact that she is trapped in the house with her ineffectual stepdad, her blabbermouth of a mom and something spooky which comes out at night, makes Kylie even more cranky than she already was. The standout for me is Rima Te Wiata as Kylie's none too bright but well intentioned mother. There will be people complaining about unlikeable characters but I don't mind when they are as fun and as well drawn as they are here. The comedy develops naturally out of the situation of a highly dysfunctional family being trapped in a spooky house. Nobody strains to give a comedy performance, in best Antipodean tradition the humor is totally deadpan. The set-up is similar to the forgettable Famke Janssen horror flick 100 Feet but this film does the premise of being under house arrest in a haunted house justice. If the film has one flaw then it's one typical of many a first time film: Housebound runs on a little too long and would have made a perfect 90 minute film. It takes a while to really get going. But that's a small complaint in comparison to how much the film gets right, from the performances to the art direction to how the film springs both scares and laughs and how it keeps one guessing. It really hits its stride in the last third, when all hell breaks lose and the plot twists and turns. I think this is available on demand in the US for those who can't wait for the Blu-ray. Shame the BD isn't coming out in time for Halloween. And Housebound most definitely isn't 'cheesy' as the OP appears to think, it's far too self-aware. ![]() Last edited by Todd Tomorrow; 10-25-2014 at 01:56 PM. |

Interesting film, definitely took a turn I wasn't expecting which is a good thing. Avoid spoilers on this movie.
Reminds me of something Peter Jackson would have made a long time ago before he went Hollywood and big budget. |

I'll second that. I just finished it and for me it's the best horror movie of the year (so far). The movie is just a lot of fun for what it tries to be: It's somewhat cheesy and funny and scary/suspenseful at the same time. It has its unexpected moments. I would recommend it to people who enjoy say Dead Alive and Evil Dead 2 as well as You're Next; those kinds of horror comedies.

The sly sense of humor saved this film for me. The filmmakers should have done more to cut 20 or 30 minutes, there was no reason this story needed two hours. It's decent rental material, especially if you are into the lighter side of horror.

Totally just ordered a copy! Probably one of my favorite film of the year! It was way too good and witty and smart, highly entertaining, and just an all out great time! I couldn't recommend it more! I've been telling everyone.
Love that it comes with a commentary! |
