For awhile now my local Hastings has had one shelf for Blu-rays to buy and only half a shelf of HD DVDs. They also have 2 shelves of Blu-rays to rent and 2 shelves of HD DVDs. Today I noticed that they expanded the Blu-ray rental section to 3 shelves and the HD DVD was left with one shelf. It looks like even smaller companies such as Hastings are phasing out the HD DVDs already.

I wish I could say the same about my local Blockbuster. I went in today to see if they had any HD media and all they had was 7 (total inventory) Blu-ray movies. No HDDVD in inventory at which is a good thing but on 7 movie for Blu just plain sucked.

I guess it depends on where you are. The Blockbuster nearest m has a really big display of Blu-ray, no HD DVD. They only have one of each title, and the newest releases are ALWAYS checked out.

Blockbuster Video has typically arrived late to supporting new video formats.
Where I live, we have fairly large locations of Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video. The Blockbuster location is in a renovated building that used to be a 2-screen movie theater. I hardly visit either business. Hastings Books, Music & Video has typically been a pretty progressive company. Our local Hastings location had DVDs for rent within a couple or months after the DVD format was launched and did quite a bit to promote DVD to customers. Hastings has always had a larger and better selection of movies to rent. My only complaint with Hastings is the company's very stupid habit of cramming any release with 2 or more discs into one little single disc rental case. They basically ruin the DVDs right away by forcing them onto a single disc spindle. I have complained to them for years about this and they have done nothing. So I don't rent any 2 disc releases from them; I take that business up the street to Hollywood Video. Our local Hastings has been selling and renting movies on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD for about a year. At first they had all the HD-quality discs just mixed together in one section. Now they're getting separated with Blu-Ray getting more and more space to itself. |

went to a shop in France where they sell some DVDs (specialist in books), the Blu-ray / HD DVD was about 55/45 for Blu on one shelf, but last week, I saw about 10 HD DVDs but no Blu ... just under a full shelf was for Blu-ray (35+ I think)
The smaller shops absolutely need to offer products that will sell, as they usually can't send back unsold items like big shops do. |
