Default Favourite Astronaut / Space exploration movies

Which are your favourite movies featuring astronauts in space or on a space mission? Also why are they your favourites?

Interstellar because it's damn smart and very intriguing.
Dark Star because it's funny.
None of the Alien movies have astronauts, so I'll go with Event Horizon because it's scary.

I've yet to watch First Man, I'm on a bit of a space fix lately so I really need to check it out.

I love Apollo 18!

Is not everyone by definition in all of the Alien movies astronauts? Someone trained to command, pilot, or crew a space vessel.

Yes same, I wish there were more space / sci fi movies with a similarly optimistic ending/ finale.

Yeah, personally speaking I would consider Alien, Prometheus and Alien Covenant to have astronauts.

Yes agreed, Supernova was close to that even though most of the crew died.

I mean if that is not how you see it that is fine.

What from your perspective would eliminate them from using that term?

Oh man it's been ages since I saw Supernova, would love to revisit it but I think the only available blu is the region locked US release.

I assume you mean movies that are somewhat realistic, not stuff like Star Wars (where space ships behave like Top Gun jets and princesses fly through space without a suit ). Most of my favorites have already been mentioned (2001, First Man, The Martian, Gravity, Sunshine, Interstellar). The first 3 quarters of Ad Astra are also pretty good. But I'd have to say my favorite in this category is a documentary: Apollo 11 (2019). If you 'd also consider TV series, check out The Expanse.

It's a snorefest. And I love space/astronaut movies

My fav is The Martian, I love the message of never giving up and using your head, and you just might make it.
