The film mostly taking place in America is a big flaw. For some reason, whenever Bond comes to America, it just becomes a bit stale. Perhaps it was because of Guy Hamilton, who directed Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, and Diamonds are Forever, all of which largely take place in America. Bond should be exotic and though I'm an American, I can admit, America is not exactly exotic.

We'll lose a great movie with this one. I went with Goldfinger for the more oddball presentation and the performance of the antagonist, but I love both.

From Russia With Love - probably the best Bond film of all.

These are my top 2 Bond films, and they have similar strengths - Sean Connery in his prime, with debonair assurance and screen presence to burn, clever plotting, wonderful '60's flavor scored to John Barry, a magnificent pair of villains and cracking dialogue replete with marvelously witty lines. They're both classics and Bond at its finest.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE would be a great spy thriller even without Bond, and that brutal fight on the train along with the pairing of the diabolical Rosa Klebb and menacing "Red" Grant ("The first one won't kill you.Not the second. Not even the third. Not till you crawl over here and kiss my foot!") make it an all-timer. Still, what truly differentiates Bond for me is that wonderful element of fantasy, and that's best exemplified in GOLDFINGER- which perhaps more than any other film in the series, achieves the ideal balance between thriller, adventure, humor and a touch of the fantastic. Goldfinger and Oddjob are perfection as the villains, Honor Blackman ranks alongside Diana Rigg as the smartest and most sophisticated of Bond heroines from this era, and the writing is sharp throughout. That iconic - and eerily beautiful - image of Shirley Eaton covered in gold paint, the climatic confrontation in Fort Knox, Shirley Bassey belting out that title song and damn, that tricked-out Aston Martin all contribute to make this THE classic James Bond film...hell, it's even great enough to bring tension to a sequence centered on a round of golf. Though I'd never fault anyone for choosing the superb FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, it's GOLDFINGER for me. |

From Russia With Love is marginally the better film, and a better spy film, but Goldfinger brings too much to the table in terms of the blueprint it created for the rest of the series to overlook it. In fact, not just Bond, but many elements of the modern action movie originate with Goldfinger.

Ironically enough, very little of Goldfinger was actually shot in America, most of the Fort Knox stuff was shot at Pinewood in England. |

![]() [Show spoiler] Seriously, you people need to STOP READING MY MIND!!!!!!! Absolutely love both of them, but if I have to pick one...it's GOLDFINGER. THE iconic Bond movie. Everything that means Bond is present here, frequently imitated, never surpassed. My favorite Bond/villain exchange: "Do you expect me to talk?" "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to DIE!!!!!!!" |
