Gotta love the MPAA and some of their rating descriptions. Here are a few I've seen that make me chuckle:

I think it was Mr Bean's Holiday that got a PG for "Irresponsible Behaviour". |

Mother’s Boys - Rated R for language and for a mother’s sociopathic behavior.
Clerks – Rated R on appeal for extensive use of extremely explicit sex-related dialogue. (I don't think they mentioned how appalled they were by the dialogue in the film enough) Matilda – Rated PG for elements of exaggerated meanness and ridicule, and for some mild language. 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up – Rated PG-13 for non-stop ninja action. (Probably the most positive review for that film. Braindead– Rated R for an abundance of outrageous gore. |

Yeah, it makes you wonder sometimes. I was watching a Blu-ray the weekend where the commentary was talking about ratings and how weird they are to work with and how the word f*** will get you an R automatically. The commentary was from 2005 - how many X-men movies were rated R? What is really odd is a lot of those 80's movies were for nudity before PG-13 was created - how much nudity do you see in a PG-13 movie now? The ratings are such a mess.

I remember laughing really hard at the DVD box of Coach Carter many years ago, because the rating description mentioned a "scene of teen partying".

I'm still trying to figure out why the original Psycho is rated R. I mean Basic Instinct is rated R... how can you compare the content of one to the other and still come up with a restricted rating?
![]() Oh, and don't forget Sixteen Candles with a full on set of hooters of the girl taking a shower in the locker room....it's rated PG!!! ![]() |

Psycho was rated R in 1983 for a forthcoming home video release, before the creation of the PG-13 rating (the much more violent Psycho II could have also played a role in the R rating). If re-rated today, it would be easily a PG-13 but there were some protests from conservative groups over re-rating pre-1984 titles at the time so re-submissions of older movies have rarely happened as a result.
The only way Psycho gets re-rated is if a major reissue of the film happened or new footage was unearthed and edited back in. Universal isn't like Warner Bros. in re-submitting older titles. |

GREMLINS: "Some Scenes May Startle Young Children"
That was how it was tagged in New Zealand - I actually met the ratings board guy at a party and he told me he didn't want to restrict it but didn't know how to word an advisory for it. |
