Default Arrival (2016)

Quote:
I'm curious about the status of two projects that you're developing: one with Jessica Chastain, and the sci-fi "Stories of Your Life."
The first one with Jessica Chastain is an adaptation of the Russell Banks book "The Darling." [It's a] very strong story but it's in development right now, we are working on the screenplay and it won't be my next project. "The Story of Your Life" is a sci-fi movie that is based on a short story written by Ted Chiang, which deals with the poetry of words and the strength of language and how language contains your perception of the world. It's really about a university linguist that is hired by the US government to try to translate the language of extra terrestrials that just landed on Earth. It's very poetic, and a strong take on an alien landing on Earth. It's very original, very fresh and very inspiring. I'm very excited about that project. I'm supposed to shoot it at the beginning of 2015.

Sounds outstanding.

Villeneuve is a filmmaker with loads of talent and a very bright future.

Seems good, granted the title is a little vague and misleading.

Title changed to Arrival, release date November 11th:

Quote:
Earlier this week we revealed that Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi drama, previously going under Story of Your Life but now titled Arrival, would be arriving this November, and now Paramount have set a specific date. Already set for a U.K. release on November 11th, it’ll be arriving on the same day in the United States, the studio revealed today.

Keeping up his long streak of one-word titles, it sounds like a more fitting description of the film. Currently planned for a wide release off the bat, it’ll open on the packed weekend alongside Ang Lee‘s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Warren Beatty‘s long-awaited Rules Don’t Apply and Universal’s Almost Christmas, as well as the Naomi Watts-led thriller Shut In. Considering it’s five months away though, expect some of those to shift around. In the meantime, see the synopsis below and watch cinematographer Bradford Young discuss shooting the film.

Arrival is a new major motion picture starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forrest Whitaker, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners and Sicario).

When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team is put together to investigate – including language expert Louise Banks (Amy Adams). Mankind teeters on the verge of global war as everyone scrambles for answers – and to find them, Banks will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

I'll watch pretty much anything with Amy Adams, and certainly directed by Villeneuve. Combine that with Renner and Forrest Whitaker, and a very engaging sounding premise? I'm all over this.

Incendies and Enemy were smaller yet strong and atmospheric movies and Prisoners and Sicario were amazing. I'm sold on Denis and will watch anything he makes. Looking forward to this one.

Sicario was excellent, but Incendies is arguably still his best film. Enemy is probably his weakest, in my opinion, although I say that without having seen his two French-language films, Maelstrom and Polytechnique.

I will definitely see this when it is released, although I'm not a big fan of Jeremy Renner.

Yea I'm having my doubts with the cast but I always thought Renner gave a solid performance in The Town. If he can do something like that for this movie, it could be something special.

One reddit poster apparently saw the test screening a while back and ranks it 3rd, behind Sicario and Prisoners.

Villeneuve and Bradford Young, I smell a beautiful looking film at the very least.

Holy crap!

I didn't even realize he was the cinematographer for this film. This just shot straight to the top of my watch list.

How have I not heard of this movie before? I'm down for anything Renner does, Adams is icing on the cake. Villaneuve is very hit-or-miss for me (I loved Prisoners, thought Sicario was meh, hated Enemy, haven't seen Incendies), but his name at least isn't a detriment.

This will be great.

Villeneuve hasn't done anything wrong yet.

You should rectify that, especially if Prisoners is the film in his filmography that you struck a chord with you.

Neither had I until I checked IMDb just in case it was Deakins sneakily shooting this.

Not familiar with his work. What do you recommend for me to check out?
