Default Call Me by Your Name (2017)

My friend text me today telling me one of our favorite books (my favorite) was becoming a movie. Both of us have wanted this to happen ever since reading it. I was relieved to see it's in the hands of a talented filmmaker (Luca Guadagnino of A Bigger Splash, I Am Love fame) and starring a talented name actor in Armie Hammer. I'd always envisioned someone like Joe Wright or, after A Single Man, Tom Ford would direct it. But having seen A Bigger Splash last week I'm pretty pleased with whose behind the camera. The novel is just so amazing. Great writing, beautiful, heartbreaking. I know it can be a great movie if done right.

Article and some set pics: http://awardswatch.com/news/luca-gua...thee-chalamet/

The book is by André Aciman and I cannot recommend it enough.

So no straight man can play gay? Fine. Then no gay man can play straight.

Why in the bloody hell does the sexual orientation of the actor matter whatsoever? It is called acting. A gay man can play straight and a straight man can play gay. Dear lord there is always something.

Anyway I like Armie Hammer I thought he was enjoyable in Lone Ranger.

Apparently if he'd done the movie for free, he'd be perfectly fine.

Hammer gets a lot of stick but he was great in Lone Ranger and Man from Uncle, the only two things I've seen him in. I guess people don't like him because of his family's wealth I don't know.

I like his toothpaste!

I Am Love, and A Bigger Splash are both excellent, imo, and I'm actually interested in finding out what this guy will bring to the Suspiria remake he's supposed to be making at the end of the year. This one will be a must see as well. Saw that he was directing this a bit back, but didn't know it was based on a novel, or what it was about until now.

Haven't seen Lone Ranger but he was also good in J. Edgar and VERY good in The Social Network (giving essentially two performances). His cameo in Entourage was also pretty funny.

I will probably see it anyway, because I Am Love was exquisite and LGBT films (good ones, that is) are so hard to come by.
Sorry, but I'm a little confused here. First off, I'm not familiar with the book so have no idea what the characters' ethnicity is there, is he not "supposed" to be white? Also, wouldn't the actor be cis even if he was gay? Cis only means your gender identity conforms with your biological sex as far as I know, which means the majority of people whatever their sexual orientation is are cis.

Anyway, I have no problem with straight actors playing gay characters or vice versa (which happens all the time). Sexual orientation isn't like ethnicity where it's reflected in how you look physically, a white straight guy can convincingly play a white gay guy and it's no big deal.

It's called acting. They're playing a part. They didn't hire a real sniper for the lead in American Sniper and I'm pretty sure Anthony Hopkins doesn't eat people.

Anyway, I don't know how far Hammer's acting chops go but I've liked him in everything I've seen him in. Reaper, Social Network, Man From U.N.C.L.E., and I'm sure I'm forgetting something else. I think he'll do well in this role. And as I said, I highly recommend the book. The writing is superb. It made the New York Times list of most notable books of 2007. It's one of those books that makes me wish I could forget everything that happens so I could read it again for the first time.

This is yet another case of you inventing an issue when there isn't one and making a case against anybody who's white and/or straight. You're accusing others of derailing 'another LGBT-themed thread' but all you do is derail threads with your bullshit. As others have stated much better than I ever could, it's an actor's job to act. Who cares about the sexual orientation of the actor as long as they're portraying the character convincingly?

I also think it's funny that you accuse people of being trolls when you fit the description better than anyone.

Most of the high profile LGBT roles have been played by straight actors. It's nothing new. I started a thread on LGBT movies, I should know. I obviously wasn't implying that a straight actor couldn't play a gay role, or vice versa. And, for the record, very few openly gay actors play straight roles, but that's neither here nor there. I still think Armie Hammer is a bland actor choice. Also, I guess, all the trolls in the thread chose to ignore the part where I said I would still see the film. Although, many of them will not, and only commented in this thread to take a jab at me and derail yet another LGBT-themed thread. But, yes, I'm clearly the one who needs to grow up.
maybe Hammer was more convincing as a gay man than the actual gay men that auditioned for the part.

I'm gay, and truth is, there aren't many well-known gay actors. It's not like Neil Patrick Harris could play the part. I'd rather they cast a name so more people see the film rather than an unknown actor just because they happen to be gay.

I think what we should be happy about is having another mainstream gay film, this time a (what appears to be) a prolific, coming of age tale. Gyllenhaal and Ledger portrayed gay/bisexual men for a mainstream film and that worked well with them being straight males. Armie Hammer seems to want to follow that example, and I say "Good for him" for wanting to expand his filmography. He's nice to look at and I enjoy him as an actor. I'm guessing he'll be playing the older of the two males, then? I don't see him playing a 17 or 18 year old, but I know it's been done before...

He's also already played gay (or at least a man with homosexual tendencies, since I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed that Clyde Tolson was gay) once in J. Edgar, so this isn't exactly uncharted territory for him.
