Today marked the unveiling of LG's Blu-ray player -- the BD100. Sparing no expense, the guys at LG marked the rollout by inviting Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Darren Campbell, who was only too happy to lend a hand.

The BD100 is a full 1080p model featuring an HDCP-compliant HDMI port, as well as component, composite and coaxial for good measure. You get 5.1 audio and digital optical S/PDIF as standard, plus video upscaling -- it'll morph 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p and 1080i to 1080p. Playback compatibility is fairly good, too -- it'll read Blu-ray discs, DVD+R and DVD-R discs, DVD-RAM, and MP3 and WMA audio CDs.

LG wouldn't tell us how much it cost, save to say the BD100 will be "competitively priced" when it's released in "early 2007". HD-lovers should also check for the LG 47LB2RF, a 47-inch 1080p HD Ready television that LG reckons will give a 200 per cent clearer picture than you're used to.

We asked Darren Campbell what he thought of LG's Blu-ray offering and he reckoned he was "astounded" by the image quality, although he replied in the negative when we asked if he'd swap a kidney for one. He also declined the offer of swapping his gold medal (and little finger) for LG's 71-inch MW-71PY10 plasma.

We'll have full reviews of the BD100 and its associated tellies as soon as we get them from LG. -RR

Poor HD-DVD supporters. Just when they thought they were surely going to get a new company making HD-DVD players!

Actually I have to say that I have watched about 13 or 14 HD-DVD's in a row now without a single glitch. However, ironically, 2 days ago I decided to watch a SD DVD using the Toshiba (United 93) instead of my Pioneer Elite 59avi. I had a complete freeze up of the entire player before I even got to the menu screen. It required a hard reboot. After that, everything played fine. So even though it has been better overall, it will still sneak up and bite me in the ass once in a while. The worst part is when friends are over and this happens. This time, it was just me and my wife. "Wife: how much did you pay for this new player again"? Ugh.

Wow, what a tough week. First, all the FUD about X-Men not being released this year. Second, all that FUD about the HD DVD of Reds being a single DL30 as opposed to BD's two SL25s. And last, the FUD about LG waffling on BD. What next?

That's how it was with me. It's weird. It's like entropy just started to set in.

I crossed a threshold and from that point forward I had an increasing number of glitches. Firmware. Hard resets, you name it. Nothing worked.

I've never owned a more expensive piece of crap than I did with that player being here in my house for six weeks.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to get rid of it and get virtually all of my money back on the player itself.

my girl had movie night with her gf's a few weeks back. they watched the breakup. A) nobody knew it was HD. B) there was a av/sync toward the end apparently...my girl said nobody really paid it any mind. But i'd have been all concerned from that point on had that happened and i'd been there. which now takes away from enjoying movies on that format because i'm always looking for it to happen now. and as JTK says, i feel lucky if it doesn't.

I was hoping all the hd dvd zealots would start several new threads like...

LOTR and the Matrix...will never be released on BD...which translated to normal speak = we would get it next week.
The Sony and Pioneer players will never do advanced audio other than PCM...which translates to they both end up doing DD-HD and DTS-MA.

Exactly

And also now, when we have the Sammy, Panny, Philips and LG - their biggest hope they will cry a lot!

Well well well, poor hd dvd loosers, i feel sorry for you with your crappy Toshiba bulk

After raising eyebrows by having no Blu-ray plans to show at its dealer show in Orlando a few days ago, LG finally announced its new BD100 Blu-ray player at the Best of Stuff show in London yesterday. The BD199 player shown previously was cancelled abruptly, and for a moment LG seemed ready to replace it with a dual format HD DVD / Blu-ray player, but the company later backed off those plans. The BD100 will include HDMI, component, composite, coaxial, and S/PDIF outs, whether 5.1 audio output via analog is included is unclear. 1080p Blu-ray playback and DVD upconversion is definitely part of the package, plus DivX, WMA and MP3 compatibility. LG officials refused to commit to a price or launch date, only that it would be "competitively" priced. Whether that means competitive in Australia, relative to the Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player (£499) or the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player (£1000) -- both were also on display at the show -- is unknown.
