Enter the Fat Dragon (2020) - Donnie Yen

Coming off the currently mega successful Ip Man 4, Donnie Yen is coming out with another movie soon.

This time it's a contemporary action comedy where he plays a cop who gains weight after being dumped by his girlfriend, and attempts to slim down by taking on a task of escorting a convict to Japan, who mysteriously dies, and that gives the cop a new task of solving the case. Despite the movie title, this won't be a remake of the 1978 movie starring Sammo Hung.

The movie is directed by Japanese action director/stuntman Kenji Tanigaki and co-stars Wong Jing, Niki Chow, and Teresa Mo. Release date is set to January 23.

Not a remake of the Sammo Hung film then... weird that they decided to use the same title, but I'll go watch anything with Donnie Yen in if it plays anywhere near me.

Can't possibly be any worse than Ip Man 4, that's for sure.

Wong Jing was involved with the 1978 movie so he probably felt that re-using the same title for this movie would benefit for the spoofy approach. This is a LNY movie, after all.

Yeah there's probably not much thought put into it beyond they liked the name I guess. I didn't know Wong Jing was involved in the 78 film though, do you know in which capacity he was involved?

I just checked the creditials of the 1978 movie at HKMDB but Wong Jing's name isn't listed. Sorry for the misinformation.

Well, it's the right time that he was starting out in the movie business as a writer, and it's the kinda film you could imagine him writing so I think you can be forgiven for thinking he was involved!

This new Donnie Yen film was first announced on western sites a year or so back as a remake of the Sammo film, but I wonder if they were just assuming it would be a remake given the title and a lack of plot details, or the filmmakers really did originally intend to produce a remake of the Sammo film and things changed?

It's possible that news were perceived the wrong way or the filmmakers changed the idea during pre-production. But then again, everything news that hits the net can be anything.
