I just bought a new HDTV (after sending back a different one). It's a Vizio 47". Everything seems to be okay so far, however, I'm a little suspicious of the aspect ratio. I was watching Spiderman 3 and I noticed that it was in Widescreen. Is that normal for Blu-Ray movies? Before, I was running them on a Westinghouse 42", but I can't remember if that played it in Fullscreen or Widescreen. Both TVs are 1080p, and it seems to me that Blu-Ray movies should be made to fit that perfectly. Can anyone confirm if widescreen is normal?

1080 p is Widescreen however... What you're talking about is the bars on the top and bottom right?
Most movies are made in wider then 16:9 that the t.v.'s are made in. |

top and bottom black bars for blu-ray doesn't make any sense. Blu-ray is meant to watch in HD, and that requires HD TV, and all HDTV are in widescreen...why the need to still have top and black bars?
Ever seen a blu-ray disc with choice of full screen or widescreen version? |

Not all films have the same aspect ratio. E.g. a film with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 at the cinema will have black bars top and bottom on blu-ray. Liz |

huh? no movie is 4:3 and very few are 16:9. i think u need to read up on aspect ratios. most movies r wider than 16:9 that is y we get black bars on the top and bottom. 4:3 gives blck bars on the sides

I think you need to do a little more research about aspect ratios because you seem a little confused about what constitutes a full screen and a widescreen picture.

[_]
"Full Screen" usually refers to 4x3 ratio screens, such as old tv tube sets. [__] 16X9 is the ratio that about all HDTV's are sold as. Most HD Television shows are made to fit this size. But maybe half or less of all movies are made this ratio. I've seen that alot of comedies are made to fit 16x9 ratio screens. [___] Many more movies are made what I like to personally call "super-wide". This is about an 2.40:1 ratio which creates little black bars on top and bottom of widescreen televisions, but even more apparant on the old tube sets. The only thing that can be done to "fill the screen" is to zoom in a bit, but thus causes a bit of the left and right of the movie not to be shown. Also from what I've noticed, movie theater screens are "super wide" 2.40:1 ratio. But when there is a 16x9 movie that picture is fit in a way that the left and right sides remain in the dark, but you are not missing anything picture-wise.
