FX is such a powerhouse. They have produced such shows as The Americans, The Bridge, Sons of Anarchy, Justified. Awesome! Now hopefully The Strain will be a hit.

FX is closing in on a hefty deal to develop a TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro‘s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain,” with Carlton Cuse (A&E’s drama series “Bates Motel”) on board as showrunner, reports Variety.
FX is in final negotiations to order a pilot with the understanding that the project would likely be fast-tracked to a series order. Del Toro will co-write the pilot with Chuck Hogan, his co-author on the HarperCollins books, and he will direct. The plan is to begin lensing in Toronto in the fall of next year.
Project marks a leap of faith for FX which has never before ordered a pilot on the strength of a pitch. Cinemax and Starz were also aggressive contenders for the project.
Del Toro envisions “Strain” as an event series that would have a clearly defined end date. The project is favorite of del Toro’s, who spent years developing his own unique spin on vampire mythology for the books. The first of the series bowed in 2009.
“These are very scary vampires,” Cuse told Variety. “These are not romantic vampires. They will give you nightmares.“
Robert Maillet will appear in the FX pilot “The Strain,” directed by Guillermo del Toro. If you’re unfamiliar with him, he plays a Russian Jaeger pilot in Pacific Rim, that’s him up there on the left looking like a character out of Dodgeball. He joins Sean Astin, Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro and John Hurt in the high-concept thriller.
Per The Wrap he, “has been cast as “The Master,” an ancient vampire. He’s described as an “evil that has nested in secret and darkness, feasting on human suffering until now, emerging from the shadows to force a new world order.”

Wow, this one’s moving right on along, isn’t it? Kevin Durand (pictured above; “Lost”, Dark Was The Night) is joining the TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain” with Carlton Cuse (“Bates Motel”) as showrunner. Per Variety, Durand will play “ a second-generation Ukranian-American, a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York.”

Titanic‘s Jonathan Hyde and Inglourious Basterds‘ Richard Sammel, pictured, have boarded the Corey Stoll starrer.
Based on del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s book trilogy first published in 2009, “the story centers on a vampire virus that infects New York and the CDC doctor, Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, who investigates the case.”
“House of Cards” breakout Corey Stoll will play Goodweather, the head of the CDC’s Canary Team in New York who is called upon to investigate a viral outbreak connected to an evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph will lead a team of New Yorkers as it wages a war and defends humanity.
Hyde, who played Ismay in James Cameron’s Titanic, will portray the series regular role of Eldritch Palmer, an elderly tycoon who’s the third-richest man in the world who has been an invalid since childhood. Though his life-long fight against his frail body, he’s developed a relentless drive to attain immortality by any means necessary.
Sammel, meanwhile, will play Thomas Eichorst, a mysterious figure from Professor Abraham Setrakian’s past whose re-emergence in New York is not a coincidence.

It was really only a matter of time before FX greenlit "The Strain," its high-profile vampire apocalypse project created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan and based on the pair's trilogy of novels of the same name. The network ordered a pilot for the series packed with interesting names like Corey Stoll as the lead and Kevin Durand, Sean Astin, Mia Maestro and others in the cast, with del Toro directing from a script he co-wrote with Hogan.
Today FX made it official, ordering 13 episodes of the series, which is being produced by FX Productions and will air in July 2014 as what's sure to be one of the biggest new shows of the summer. Carlton Cuse, of "Lost" and "Bates Motel," will be a writer and the showrunner.

In The Strain, “Setrakian” is a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers – if anyone will listen. This role was previously held by John Hurt, but was recast by the producers and FX Productions.
Bradley joins an ensemble cast that features Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, and Miguel Gomez.

“You’ll never look at vampires the same way again,” writer-producer Carlton Cuse promised critics at the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday.
Cuse showed reporters an extended trailer for the upcoming FX thriller, which had a cool-palette look and cinematic feel. In the first episode, which is directed by Guillermo Del Toro, an airplane lands at JFK and everybody on the plane appears to be dead. It turns out the plane is carrying a mysterious cargo which unleashes a unique strain of vampires as the CDC struggles to control the outbreak. Shots included a very creepy inspection of the corpse-filled plane, a smidgeon of girl-girl sex, a vampire-seeming girl returning home to an ill-advised embrace, and a huge mysterious creature attacking a victim. “We’ve been working on this for 18 months and I think when you see it, it shows,” Cuse says.
The brief sex shot confused some critics into thinking The Strain vampires would be amorous, however. In the books by Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who also created the show, victims lose their genitals as they convert to being vampires (which would probably have completely prevented Twilight from ever being a thing).
“These are not sparkly brooding dudes with fangs and romantic problems,” Cuse said. “This is a really original re-imagining of vampire lore … there is sex in the show, but the vampires themselves are not having sex. They are not romantic creatures.”

Based upon a three-novel book series, Cuse said he expects The Strain to last between three and five seasons. The first season will cover the first book, and after that producers will decide how far to stretch the two remaining novels. The Strain premieres in July. Here’s a couple more photos

The Strain begins production later this month in Toronto and the series is scheduled to premiere in July of 2014 on FX.

This marks the first time FX has committed to a drama pilot off a pitch. It also makes it a full circle for The Strain, which del Toro originally conceived as a TV series. When he couldn’t sell it, then-Endeavor agent Richard Abate, now at 3 Arts, suggested del Toro turned the idea into a book and made the introduction to Hogan. When the first book was published, the networks and studios came knocking. “We started receiving offers for movies and TV rights after the publication of the first book but we didn’t want do anything because we didn’t want that train of thought to influence the way we were writing the books,” del Toro told Deadline.
I have a copy of the first book, but hadn't gotten around to reading it yet. I'll try to fit it in before the series debuts.
