![]() ![]() For those that keep up with the show on physical media, the Special Edition digipaks seasons 1-3 received have seemingly been abandoned in favor of steelbooks that take the standard editions and simply add a bonus disc for the Aftershow episodes. The good news is at least the discs aren't stacked. There's a tray inside to hold discs 2 and 3. The steel itself is glossy with indented fish on the back. It's available for purchase on the show's site through an exclusive link given to ChosenCon attendees (but anyone with this link can order it): https://gifts.thechosen.tv/products/...osen-steelbook No word, yet, if seasons 1-3 will be re-released with steels and if they are, whether they're going to be the SE discs or the standard ones. Initial pressings of the steel come with one of these art cards (my copy came with the one for Matthew): https://www.instagram.com/p/C-YdVu5O...en&img_index=1 https://www.instagram.com/p/C-5459iO...en&img_index=1 |

It's retailing for $34.99. So about the price of most steels nowadays but way cheaper than the Special Edition digipaks of seasons 1-3 that are $55.99. The marketing campaign for this series has varied wildly with each season, so if we end up getting steels of 1-3, they won't match visually with this one unless someone designs new collage posters for them to emulate season 4's. They're still doing the black and white headshots approach for the standard Blus, but they've picked iconic screenshots to represent 1 and 2 for soundtrack repressings and the new slipcovers for the Special Edition digis. 3's been using the poster done for Fathom Events. So these would likely be used for the steels: ![]() |

There don't seem to be a lot of home theater enthusiasts in the Chosen Insider community (though Chris Durbin who hosts the behind-the-scenes content absolutely is). The DVDs always sell more than the Blus, and both outperform the Special Editions which is why I think the Chosen team decided to downgrade to steelbooks with a single bonus disc of readily-available content for the diehards like us. It's cheaper and easier for them than re-authoring the episode discs with new menus and supplements and throwing in two discs chock full of supplements. I wouldn't be surprised, though, that once the series is complete, they create a giant boxed set with new supplements at that point. |

Now that they know people like it enough that they are doing theatrical releases and the like, I'm sure if this season's release does well, they'll go back and do the others. |

The original link on TheChosenGifts.com is now live to the public as well as the Walmart link for $5 less. The Walmart link mentions a 10-22-24 release date, so if you want to pick up a copy in person, you can try visiting a location then.
Last year's Christmas special "Holy Night" is also now available on Blu-ray: https://gifts.thechosen.tv/products/...41310398480439 The description, however, is confusing and seems to indicate not only are the recycled musical performances from the prior two specials aren't on here (only the new one with the Bocellis), but that they added two additional monologues. I wish we could just view the "Holy Night" edit on its own apart from everything else, even if it's just on the site. I'd like it to be my go-to Christmas watch instead of the two episodes separate. Supposedly in one of the livestreams they talked about hopefully doing it down the road.
But I can understand why they don't stream in 4K or their first batch didn't release in it, for budgetary reasons. Same reason they waited to give fans a steelbon until season 4. In the beginning they were almost entirely crowdfunded (I want to say 100%), and it would have exponentially increased their costs. Give it time. |

Yeah, Dallas Jenkins at least once has confirmed that the series is both shot and edited in 4K, so a UHD release would be native and not an upscale. But since The Chosen was hosting the content on their own site/app, I understood why they would just cap out at 1080p for budgetary concerns. What I find weird is they could've submitted the native 4K files to Hulu and Prime, yet those are only HD, too. Maybe they didn't want outsourced venues having better quality than their native app.
I suspect once the series is complete, we're gonna get a plethora of choices in terms of formats and boxed sets. Heck, that's already happening with DVD. The show's gift store has several exclusive boxed set repackagings of the current seasons. Season 1 can really use an HDR regrade. It's so dreary compared to the more vivd later seasons, though you could also chalk that up to a storytelling device as Jesus doesn't go public with His ministry till the end of season 1. Once He does, the "world" becomes vibrant. |
