Default CyberLink PowerDVD 20 Ultra retail box version with CD-ROM (released 6-15-2020)

On June 15th 2020 Cyberlink released the retail box version of PowerDVD 20 Ultra which comes in a fancy retail box with CD-ROM installation disc and a manual. Only one website currently has the retail box in stock. Every year or almost every year New Egg gets the retail box version before Amazon’s website. $99.99 plus tax.

I wasn’t really impressed with the quality of video on 19. I don’t remember so much digital noise in previous versions. I’m wondering if it is the newer drivers or the codecs they are using.

I am still waiting for my PowerDVD 20 Ultra to arrive in the mail, however on my old PowerDVD 19 Ultra I did not have any picture quality issues using a five year old 4K LG MU67 series computer monitor with HDCP 2.2.

Some movies with film grain can look like digital artifacts on certain displays and computer monitors. Try several different Blu-ray disc titles to make sure its not the movie. You can always uninstall and install the software on a second PC to see if you get better Blu-ray playback on a second PC.

After playing with all the settings and levels I finally found what the problem was. The player's contrast setting is too high by default (at least with my monitor). I toned it down a little in the NVIDIA settings for video players. Seems to have fixed it. I was adjusting everything but the basic settings. pretty silly.

but in my defense there are a lot of settings to play with between the monitor, the video player, and NVIDIA

Interesting article. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Mac adopted the blu ray format.

It is good that some software to play standard 2D 1080P Blu-ray discs on the MAC is starting to appear on the market. However the best quality way to play back Blu-ray discs is still PowerDVD 19 Ultra with full support for Blu-ray 3D and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs (Which requires a Windows PC for standard 2D and 3D Blu-ray discs and Windows 10 for 4K Blu-ray).

Quote from article:

“The only shortfall I found in Macgo's app, besides its price, was its lack of support for 3D or 4K UHD Blu-rays. I'm sure that's a dealbreaker for some folks, but most users probably won't lament it.”

Powerdvd is the way to go but I found I needed to adjust the colour/contrast settings in the nvidia settings for videos. By default, the contrast is set too high and you end up with blown out whites.

I just revised my original post. PowerDVD 20 Ultra is really a downgrade since Blu-ray 3D feature has been dropped this year. A professional review I read online made the incorrect claim that Blu-ray 3D was supported.

Here is my user review for PowerDVD 20 Ultra
