Default Killer Instinct: Season 3 Coming Soon!

One of my favorite fighting games from back in the day. I would've liked for a Part 3, but its understandable why they rebooted it. After defeating Gargos, there was no where for the story to progress.

Riptor and TJ Combo were my favorites so I hope to see them back. I consider Orchid and Fulgore to be the "faces" of the franchise.

This is one game I'd always wished would come back, but after hearing the details I'm completed disinterested.
  • Free to Play, downloadable only (no retail version)
  • Only 1 character unlocked initially (Jago)
  • Other characters cost money
  • Not developed by RARE
  • Made by Double Helix, the fine folks who brought you GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Battleship: The Movie: The Game

Count me out.

As long as all the characters are available in packs for less than $60 total, no big deal. We knew the free-to-play model was going to get pushed hard in this new generation, though not in a fighting game. But yeah, that developer is a cause for concern. Good thing you can play it for free first, huh?

Meh, I bet this new Killer Instinct will be nothing like the old game and the only thing they'll have in common is the name. I say if you want Killer Instinct just set up an old CRT tv, Super Nintendo and pop in the cart. If you so please you can do so with Killer Instinct Gold for the N64.

I don't think that's fair.

I'm not a fan of Double Helix as a developer, and I don't like the character designs, but they do seem to have gotten some things right as far as the gameplay goes.

See this livestream recording with a detailed explanation of many of the techniques and mechanics built into the system, from how combos work, blocking, backdashing, combo breaks, ultras, and more.

Plus, Double Helix's track record aside, they did bring on a major player in the fighting game world to make this game. And with it being free to play... what's the risk?

Well, you'll have to buy a XBox One to play it... Another thing, it's not a Killer Instinct game unless it's made by Rare.

It's not free to play, at least not in the usual sense. It's a playable demo that happens to have one character that is allowed to play online with full retail versions.

If you want more characters, you'll have to either buy the full version, or the DLC additions for the characters you want.

Ah... and yet, there's no retail disc version of this, so it's a day one digital full release... or you can get the demo and pick and choose characters.

Jesus... they really picked the wrong genre to try and do that with. What a mess.

I dunno. Other games like Virtua Fighter have gone down this route of free-to-play-with-reduced-rosters recently, and I don't think they'd be doing that if they weren't making some money doing so.

Granted, Double Helix has a LOT to prove with this game.

Really? I didn't know Virtua Fighter had already done that. That's interesting.

On a related note... that MadCatz fightstick for Xbox One... SO SEXY. I don't know that I'll buy one until there are a few more fighters for the system, but it definitely outclasses my current stick.

are you sure about Virtua Fighter? The most recent release was Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown and thats a $15 purchase, not a free game (it was with PS+). There's the standard $15 which is the full game and ALL the characters. Theres a $30 complete edition but that includes all the customization packs for all the characters which amounts to costumes and accessories. Its not a Free to Play title. The Free to Play is something new popping up in the fighting genre and I beleive this week's release of Tekken Revolution is the first of its kind with DoA coming later this fall. Its too early to say if this is something thats profitable

Apparently this game got seriously booed at the Evo 2013 finals:

I don't know that it means anything other than people are still hating on the Xbox One, but I found it an interesting note.

Actually, that's not accurate. Xbox One got booed... Killer Instinct actually got a very nice reception, especially when Filthy Rich pulled off an Ultra Combo with Jago during their presentation.

Sorry, no. There might have been cheers somewhere, but KI got booed immediately upon them talking about it in videos I've seen. The boo a bit later for the "Exclusively on Xbox One" was a bigger boo, but you are simply wrong if you say KI never got booed in itself.

I suppose they could have flashed Xbox One on a screen during the first boo, but that's conjecture unless you were actually there.

"I felt pretty bad for the guys from Double Helix, as it was clear that they heard the chants but had to ignore them"

Yes, I would feel bad for them also. (Doesn't matter what system they release on) Not cool.

Every other video where they're actually running tourneys with KI and during the KI presentation, they were getting huge cheers. So obviously SOMEONE's excited for it. They have a hardcore fighting gamer working with them, so it should end up pretty solid as far as the fighting game community goes (and people I know who are hardcore into that genre are stoked for it).

One of my friends is a crackhead for this stuff and he watched most of the livestreams and videos from the event, and he said KI was getting pretty solid reactions. But obviously, there's backlash against Xbox One there. They're also pissed that the new fightstick is on Xbox One only apparently.
