Default My History With Importing Dvd's

It's actually a short history.

Back in 2003 i seen that a few movies i wanted to buy weren't available on Dvd here in the US but were in Region 2, 3, 4. I think Ed Wood is what got me into it. I loved that movie and it was out of print here. They released it twice and recalled it immediately both times. Also Army of Darkness region 3, it was the best the movie looked on Dvd for a long long time. Until a Region 4 version came out maybe?

So i went and bought a Malata DVP-520 dvd player for $260. If i remember right, at the time it was considered in the top 2 players based on information on different forums of the time (Probably DVD Talk). It was region free and had a Pal/NTSC converter. I still got the thing. But it's in my garage collecting dust. I still got the original box. I've considered selling it since i watch all movies on my computer now and a 32" TV. That's all i need.

But i didn't collect for too long. Bought about 10 dvd's and then i stopped. Most of these were not released here at the time, were out of print or had some special editions or features not released here.

Ed Wood R2
Army of Darkness R3
Animal House R2
Dead Poets Society R4
Breakin R0 but i think it came from Australia
Waxwork R4
Hero (Came in a cool grey box) R3 I have pics of it if anybody wants to see it
Time Bandits (comes with a cool looking time map) No Region listed
Predator 2 Disc Special Edition R4
Raging Bull 2 Disc Special Edition R2

One that i didn't buy but wish i had was the 2 disc version of a Fish Called Wanda. I think that may have finally got released here in a 2 disc version but i didn't really look into it. I put off buying that for 17 years now.

I think i bought all of those around 2003 and i didn't import anything ever again until this year. Now i got into a Kung Fu movie kick and i been buying imports right and left. Still waiting on some in the mail. Mail is so slow right now. Also some Blu-Rays but i guess this isn't the right section for that. lol

At the time i had to get used to Pal Speedup. It wasn't terrible but it was noticeable. I now have a fix for that on my computer. So now i can play any Pal dvd with no speedup. So now it doesn't matter what region i buy from.
