Default Recent blind buys that turned out pretty good

Some of the movies I buy are total blind buys. Most of the time they turn out to have been good decisions, sometimes exceptionally good.

One of those I made recently was Le tout nouveau testament [The Brand New Testament] (2015: Jaco Van Dormael) which I just bought because Benoīt Poelvoorde stars in it. The way it treats religion just struck the right chord in me.

What about you? Which recent blind buys have you made that you don't regret?

My most recent blind buy...

Been meaning to see this for like 10 years (GEEZ!), but it was mostly released in Japanese cinemas. Lupin III is not all that popular here in the west. But they finally released an official Blu-ray release here in the US, so I just had to blindly buy it.

Jonathan Demme's 1979 film THE LAST EMBRACE". "Hitchcock homage", totally worked for me. Highly recommended. The Cinematographe 4K is superb. I had never heard of it before.

Another one with a religious theme I just watched:
Stone (2010: John Curran)
This film isn't universally loved, far from it, but it left me with a sense of serenity films rarely give me.

Godland - an Icelandic film about a 19th century expedition. Visually stunning, memorable ... unfortunately, with some rather graphic scenes ... but otherwise a very powerful movie. Some past Criterion blind picks have let me down (Tampoopoo, Red Circle), but this one is a solid win.

A pity, I think those two are brilliant.
