This remaster looks absolutely stunning, but on the other hand I don't get why it's in 16:9 AR when the show was originally in 4:3 AR. If a distributor in US/UK/AU were to release this on Blu-ray (it's available in Germany), I'd probably consider, but the AR might be a deal breaker for me.

If they could get ahold of the 4:3 HD version (if it exists), that would be magnificent.

WMT series seem to have both 16:9 and 4:3 HD remasters available.
Anne of Green Gables aired on KIDS Station in Japan in 16:9 HD, but got a 4:3 Japanese BD release. I'm pretty sure if Tom Sawyer gets a Japanese BD release, it'll be 4:3. Tales of Little Women and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer both got 16:9 HD English Saban dub only versions available on Amazon Video. It's worth pointing out that Little Women's (and possibly Tom Sawyer's?) Saban dub is much more faithful to the Japanese version than most Saban dubs. It was dubbed 100% or 99% uncut, ignoring the OP, ED, NEP, ep title cards, and eyecatchers, and the Japanese BGMs were kept. They did fill in some musicless moments with their own BGMs though. I'm not familiar with Saban's Tom Sawyer dub, but I think that one might have a few censorship cuts? I heard the Dutch dub did. The TV airings of Little Women on Smile of a Child were censored (an American Christian TV channel that has aired (or still airs?) several anime, and which is also available outside North America). Someone recorded the show from that channel a few years before I did, which had some very minor censorship, mostly small cuts. There was a huge cut (more than 1 min), but it was in an episode that got a VHS release (but with replaced BGMs iirc, unlike the TV airings). For some reason, back then, they didn't air a specific episode (5 or 6 iirc), possibly due to misplaced masters, which did air when I recorded all or most of the show, which I can confirm was aired uncut. The latter airings of the show seem to have more cuts. One I can confirm being in episode 1 when a character was drinking wine, which was uncut in earlier airings. I haven't taken the time yet to check if the Amazon versions have the cuts or not (in case they sourced the dub masters from Smile of a Child), and if so, which censored version they got, or if they managed to get uncut masters. For all I know, the show got even more censorship cuts after I recorded the show. For now, I'm holding onto both sets of recordings, in case Amazon has it censored and a company licenses the show for home video release and wants to release it. @Anime released Tom Sawyer in 16:9 HD on Blu-ray, with only the French dub. AB Video released A Little Princess on BD, also in 16:9, but I think with both JP audio with FR subs and FR dub included. A Little Princess is/was also on Japanese VOD/streaming in 16:9 HD. Maybe only the 16:9 crop variant of the HD remasters is made available for overseas home video releases and worldwide streaming for WMT shows that don't have a Japanese home video release yet? Considering my post got kind of off-topic, and discussion of one particular WMT show might involve discussion of several/all WMT shows in general, it might be worth starting a general thread for World Masterpiece Theater shows? |
