I recently replayed The Last of Us Part II - not for the trophies, but just to go through the emotional rollercoaster again. Meanwhile, my friend replays Sekiro for the pure thrill of dying a hundred times. It made me think - when you replay games, is it more for the story immersion, or to push your skills to the limit?

It depends on the game a lot of games I've played don't have much of a story (Anno 1800, Satisfactory) so I generally start those over with the intention of being more efficient than before. But if I were to play a game like Cyberpunk 2077 or something like that it would be to replay for the story or to try out different builds in the RPG aspect of it.
I find games like Sekiro boring and limiting they're games that have a sort of golden path you have to follow there's not much creativity it's mostly just discovering that golden path and sticking to it to be able to move forward at all. A lot of games have a sort of ideal path but they also leave a lot of room to play around at the margins but games like Sekiro you're punished harshly for that to the point where you must do exactly what the developer demands or you're not going to move forward. |

I have rarely replayed games but when I have it's simply because it's fun to play.

Both. I always find it strange when people say they don’t replay games. Do they also not rewatch films or listen to albums they’ve heard before? It’s always worth returning to something you enjoyed or a great joy to relive an experience from 30 years ago when you were a kid and it’s part of the fun to try to improve at games.

It can cut both ways. When I replay Bioshock Infinite it's for the story. When I replay Uncharted games it's mostly for the gameplay. When I replay Last of Us games it's for both.
