![]() ![]() ![]() Doctor Who: The Daleks in Colour Blu-ray ![]() Doctor Who: The Daleks in Colour Blu-ray ![]() Includes the b/w serial on the DVD. I suppose it's a 50i container, from the 25fps telecines? But will it be Vidfired to 50i rate? Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-21-2023 at 06:50 PM. |

We don't know yet if they've VidFIREd the new colourisation or not.
It looks like the original version will be identical to the old discs. |

I wonder if they used a new remaster for this or if they just did it off the full-resolution DVD masters. |

The section from the 7th episode was definitely a new remaster. They found a better quality copy relatively recently (it was in the wrong can so it was missing when the DVD was made).

I nearly had a reason not to bother with this, now I do, as long as the original B&W episode from the better quality copy is on the new DVD.

The cynic in me says we're bearing witness to the potential future plans of the Beeb to exploit the show well into the future.
- Blu rays of existing serials (the season collections) - Colourised omnibus editions - Colourised full length/episodic editions (if the omnibus edition does well I can't see them stopping there). - Animated missing episodes/stories They can keep releasing DW for many many years if they pursue the above. I'm know the colourised Dalek serial is for the anniversary, but let's face it, it'll sell well, and then there will likely be more. |

Watching this now on BBC iPlayer.
I think the colour looks quite good for what they have done. I kinda like the music especially during the scene when the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara escape from the Daleks, quite upbeat music. Not sure about the editing though. About 39m 40s strange editing, Susan standing to the left of Barbara then standing to the right of the Doctor, then left and back to the right again??? Not seen the b&w for years so don't know if it's an error or sloppy editing. Update: Just finished watching it, a mixed bag but I still enjoyed. That scene at about 39m 40s is very weird, I took a look at the original b&w episode (part 4) and it does not happen so a strange editing choice, guess liberties were taken to chop it all down to 75 minutes. What a dreadful, tasteless, aesthetically offensive waste of time and money. I know Peter Jackson has provided a gateway by being the acceptable face of look-what-this-button-does tampering, and opened the floodgates to everything else, but please can we not? Must history repeat in the worst way by everybody turning into wannabe Ted Turners? Those hideous missing story animations were bad enough, but this made Red Dwarf Remastered look classy.
We have descended to a whole new level of crap. |

But the editing, the music, the holes left behind due to the editing, the new effects - yeah, all that is just a travesty. I knew this would not turn out well, and it's not due to the colorization, it's due to the horrendous decision to cut out over 60% of the story, and worse, cutting out parts that are important. |

Nah, the modern sympathy towards colourisation needs nipping in the bud. However you look at it, it fosters hostility to black and white film and TV by treating it like a problem to be solved, a horrendous contagion of pure cultural illiteracy.
We've been through this so many times now, with badly colourised films in the 80s, badly stereoised versions of mono records, 4:3 cropped to 16:9, filmised video, badly noise-reduced audio. And every time the vandalism has to be purposefully reversed at a later date. |

And I have zero issue with watching b&w content, yet I also find it fun to see some colorized vintage material. Almost every time I watch It's a Wonderful Life, I put on the UHD, in b&w. But every once in a while, I throw on the color blu-ray just to mix things up. That doesn't mean I no longer like or don't prefer the b&w version. It's just another way for me to enjoy something I've seen countless times. And that's actually not a great example of a colorized film because that's using very old colorization tech. Things have gotten much better since then. I'd love to see a more modern coloration of that film using the new 4k scan. But that doesn't mean they should never air the b&w version again. Anything handled badly is bad. If it's handled well, I don't have a problem with it. I will always prefer the original 4:3 aspect ratio for older TV shows and films, for example, but I also enjoy seeing alternate widescreen versions, for fun as an alternative, as long as they are not in any danger of replacing the original versions. I also enjoyed seeing the stunning 3D conversion of Jaws last year in the theatre, along with amazing 3D conversions like The Wizard of Oz, Titanic, Terminator II, and Jurassic Park, even though those were never intended to be in 3D originally. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy them as they were originally filmed, in 2D. I own The Wizard of Oz in 3D and on UHD, and both versions are incredible and do the film justice. Now if they suddenly made the 3D version the only version available ever again, then I'd have a problem with that. I get it. Some are very strict towards these things. But I see nothing wrong with having some fun with these things, IF respect is shown. In the case of The Daleks colorized story, RTD has not shown proper respect for the material. It's not the colorization that's the issue. It's his handling of the material. Last edited by mar3o; 11-25-2023 at 03:25 AM. |

Watched it on the night, and my god, what a mess.
The new music did not fit at all, and it's like it was edited together by one of the Daleks that had the Thal drugs tested on it! Even the almighty colouration wasn't done well in some spots! I'm tempted to cancel the preorder. |

What I saw of it looked awful. Perhaps I had impossible expectations, but it looked no better and occasionally worse than fan jobs on YouTube.
Money saved, I guess.,. |

A lot of the problem was the underlying image quality. 405-line film recordings are never going to look great, and in the case of two episodes of The Daleks they only have half that resolution. No surprise that the end result was a smeary mess in places. |
