Default 4K Player glitching when playing Blu-rays

Recently, my 4K player has been unable to play Blu-Ray discs. I have a Philips BDP7302. I tried playing the Criterion Discs of “All About Eve” and “War of the Worlds.” In each case, the audio stutters and there is no video to speak of. 4K discs play fine. Is there a fix short of buying a new player? If I need a new player, what are your recommendations? I don’t have an Oppo sized budget. Thanx in advance.

truly - an unusual problem

have you considered contacting Phillips technical support (before otherwise proceeding)?

Phillips players (in my experience) are quite good (for what it's worth)

Is your firmware updated? If so try some other Blu-ray's and see if they playback fine. If you still have the same problem try unplugging player from wall for about an hour and retest Blu-ray's. Try a laser lens cleaning disc if you have one or a blower can, could be dust in there. If problem persists, yep, time for a new UHD/BD player. It's likely an optical drive problem. Last resort if your handy is to open it up and clean laser lens gently with a lens wipe cloth for eyeglasses. Retest. You seem happy with the Phillips I would recommend the Sony X800M2. The Panasonic's are good but your getting towards Oppo price range with UB820 and UB9000.

I personally would go with the UB820 to replace it, it's worth the extra bucks and has a nice dust cover in front of tray or Sony's X800M2.

Anyway try other Blu-rays, check connections on back of player, exhaust all options before buying a new player.

Thanx for the tips. I will try them and report back. Fingers crossed...

No video *at all*? That is very odd.

If there's no video at all, then it sounds like an HDMI output problem and nothing to do with the optical system. Are you saying that even attempting to show the player menus/onscreen display doesn't work?

Wouldn't UHDs use the same laser David M? even if they're BD66 or BD100. Sounds like a weird issue, I wonder if the two Criterions are at fault. I'd try cleaning them first as well as testing some other Blu-rays.

Could it be one of these AACS issues that plagued (or for all intents and purposes, bricked) many a Samsung player recently? Maybe Philips shared some of the same build?

Like others users have said, make sure the firmware is the latest update.

Have you cheched the integrity of your hdmi cable? Could it be an HDCP2.2 issue?

I need to do some HDMI switcheroo-ing. When my TV and receiver were moved last, the HDMI cable from the receiver out to the TV very likely was the wrong type. What are some reliable cable options? What specs should I be looking for?

So sorry, I misread your post and thought you were struggling with 4K discs but could play standard blu-rays.
HDCP shouldn't be an issue then, in your case. Sorry. That's a very odd problem indeed.

The Criterion “C” loads and the accompanying drop down menu appears after a while. Audio comes in and out, stuttering. Screen is otherwise black. No video at all.

Are you able to test them elsewhere? did you manage to try other Blu-rays?

Then it’s a problem on the HDMI end, nothing to do with the laser. Try eliminating any AV receivers in the chain, connect directly to the TV, try a different cable... if all those fail, probably cheaper just to get a new player.

Update: I fired up another BD (Unplanned) and it played without a hitch. So then I pulled out the two offending Criterions, and wouldn’t you know, they played just fine. I ran a lens cleaner, just to be safe. Not sure why there was an issue in the first place, but for now all is well. I’m still going to work on switching out HDMI cables. Thanx all for the replies and advice.

Sometimes players have temporary glitches and hiccups, I have had it happen one time even with Oppo or Panasonic. It gets resolved on reboot, it doesn't mean the machine has malfunctioned. Glad you ran a disc cleaner and it never hurts to upgrade the HDMI cable. If it happens again I would look into replacing the machine. Glad your player is in working order now.

Update: I’m pretty sure this is a player issue. It still is showing only 1080p. I have an Apple TV 4K running through the same receiver, and out to the TV. The TV reports that the Apple TV displays at 2160. Switched the inputs on the receiver and the Apple TV is still displaying correctly, while the Philips continues to show the 1080p glitch. So it seems that the receiver is working as it should. I placed an order for the Sony UBP-X700, which will be here tomorrow. I’m going to test it out and see if it will fix the problem.
