Sad news, HDS was a great actor with many great roles.

Absolutely one of the all time greats. The number of great films he stacked up over the years has gotta be one of the highest totals of any actor ever.

RIP to a true legend.

Spoilers for Dillinger below...

One of THE great character actors. Lent such authenticity and depth to a myriad number of roles. I thought he was absolutely hysterical in Repo Man, and just brilliant in Paris, Texas.

I always liked this guy. Just about every role I've seen him in, I swear he was made of pure grit.

Been reading up on him, and I never realized his career was so big and he did so much. From a cook in the Navy to Hollywood, with a band on the side. That's quite an awesome life. RIP, man.

I still remember being about 9 years old and sitting in the dark theater, terrified, watching Alien. As many great roles as the man had -- and as already noted, there were a LOT of them -- that's the one that will stand out to me above all else.

RIP, Harry.

One of the greats.

Anyone here who hasn't seen PARIS, TEXAS owes it to themselves to get on that sooner than later. It's on the shortlist of all-time perfect movies, in my li'l opinion.

I also didn't know after watching Godfather II so many times that he was one of the FBI agents sitting behind Frank Pentangelli during the Senate subpoena hearing. Always wondered why he looked familiar until I read HDS's filmography.

Sad news, but not unexpected. HDS played a great "everyman" and was in a ton of great films.

It was nice that he was able to reprise his 1992 role from the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in the recent Twin Peaks S03.

Some memories:

Seeing the original Alien sometime in the '80's on VHS tape. Creepy as he$$, and my favorite characters were HDS & Yaphet Kotto.

Seeing Paris, Texas for the first time in college (circa 1993) during a film class. That film is sublime, and one of my favorites of the '80's. I saw this on Blu a while back and it was even better than I remembered. To me, this is HDS's best role.

Seeing Pretty in Pink for the first time in the 200X's (on DVD). It took me forever to finally see the film, and one of my favorite roles was HDS as Molly Ringwald's father. He wasn't in the movie much, but I found his scenes very significant. He obviously cared for his daughter, even though he had been having a difficult time ever since his wife left the family years before. The scene when MR had the conversation with HDS about her mother was quite poignant. Very deep for an '80's John Hughes teen film.
