Hi all,
I was given a BDP300 for my birthday. I have not yet bought an HDTV (that's coming soon). In the mean time, when I connect the 300 to my 6 year old Sony 37" CRT, everything is fine until I try to play a non-Blu Ray DVD. Then, I'm getting picture roll, and/or warpage that looks amazingly similar to a VHS player with bad tracking. Sometimes the rolling stops, but the picture will be split in half with people's heads on the bottom of the screen and feet at the top. I've tried all the inputs to my tv, including standard A/V, composite video, and s-video. And, my Direct TV continues to work with zero picture roll. I've tried every combination of settings on both the tv and the 300. Any ideas? |

This may sound silly, but from my experience what you have described is what occurs from the encoded copy protection on standard DVDs.
Let me explain. For anyone who has ever connected their standard DVD player up through a another component, the copy protection somehow recognizes the connections and will distort the picture for playback. This is strange. I've never had an issue with Blu-ray and SD playback. Are you connecting your player directly to your television, bypassing the third party component? You may want to play with the set-up features on your BD player. There may be an option on the video output menus. The rolling picture seems like a sync problem. Maybe there is a sequence to turning on your equipment. Like BD player first, then TV or vice versa. You might have to try as well to power down the gear, restart but avoid Blu-ray and just pop in a SD DVD. The back and forth between HD and SD could be causing something. Just keep experimenting... Also, this is one of the best times of the year to buy a new tv. Most stores have their best sales prior to Super Bowl Sunday. Go out and get that HDTV! |

Thanks for the advice. Turns out my tv has an input (composite video) that can handle 720p. When I first tried that input, I had the player set to 480i so fool that I am, I immediately started trying the other SD inputs on the tv. WRONG! I went back to the HD in, changed the setting on the player to output 720p and presto! Sorry for taking up your time.
