Default Old Article on Obsolete Players

Couldn't see this anywhere, but I got pointed to it by an HD-DVD fan boy.

I doubt you will be able to access the area where the posts are, so I'll post them, any help responding would be appreciated. Why cant these people just accept it.

Blueray has one MASSIVE down side.... its not a finished format, it is still developing and that means revisions to their players. Version 1 Blueray players will not play version 1.1 Blueray disks properly. HDDVD is now what it will be tomorrow and your 2007 player will play HD-DVDs for as long as they make them.

There is also the cost implication with making the disks, HD-DVD can be produced on standard DVD lines where as blueray is a totaly new format. If HD-DVD goes outof production expect to see a massive price rise in Blueray movies.

So you think the price will go down when they have no competition? The cost of a new plant to fab Blueray disks must be out of this world.

It's a load of crap. Largely, the same crap HD-DVD fans have been spitting out for almost a year. Profile 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 discs all will play the movies in the 1.0 player. The whole "Version 1 Bluraly players will not play version 1.1 Blureay discs properly" quote is very misleading, because to HD-DVD fans, if it doesn't have PIP and internet chat, it isn't playing the disc properly, apparently. I have yet to meet one person face to face or on the net that wasn't an HD-DVD fan trying to smackdown Blu-ray that actually cared about PiP and online features. Everyone else couldn't care less as long as it will play the darn movie.

As far as the replication costs and stuff, HD-DVD fans can't seem to get it in their head that Blu-ray isn't just Sony. If it were, they could set prices to whatever they want and not have to worry about other companies coming in and doing it for cheaper. If all the companies that make up the BDA get together and agree not to compete with one another and artificially inflate prices, that's called "Price Fixing" and is extremely illegal under anti-trust laws.

This argument has been brought up time and time again but it is not a valid argument at all. The BDA saw this potential problem and made sure that everyone conformed to a certain standard of performance. Any profile Blu-ray disc should technically work on any profile Blu-ray player. You simply will not be able to access the extra features of higher profiles than the one your player is capable of.

If HD DVD was such a great and completed platform, how come they have varying models with 1080i and 1080p performance? How come every Blu-ray model does 1080p by default? This shows a lack of due diligence when it comes to doing research. It's like going to a gunfight with a dull rusted knife.
