A while back, I read Day of the Triffids (by John Wyndham, 1951) for the first time. This was an excellent sci-fi novel, and had a lot of detail - the sense of a post-apocalyptic atmosphere was really well done here, and I was very caught up in the story. IMHO this book is definitely on par with other classic '50's sci-fi novels, i.e. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shrinking Man, etc.
Also re-watched the 1981 DOTT BBC mini-series, and was very impressed by how closely this followed the novel; many scenes, including the dialogue, were lifted right out of the book; this is definitely one of the most faithful filmed adaptations of a book I've ever seen. And, I didn't think the Triffid effects were that bad; IMHO they were fairly decent, given this was an early '80's BBC TV mini-series. So, here's hoping this BBC mini-series eventually makes it's way onto Blu. IIRC, the DVD has been OOP for years. |
