Australia Most Under-rated Film of An Actors Career...

Thought this might be a good way to shine a light on films with a view to expanding our collections. BTW, I noticed quite a few movies I own aren’t available to display in my collection on the website here. Anyone know if I should be telling this to mods?

Anyway to get the ball rolling...

Jennifer Connelly - Higher Learning (1995). I considered mentioning Dark City, but I feel like people on this site would know that movie much better than the man on the street. Higher Learning is a movie I never see mentioned though, which is a shame. Social drama set on a University Campus surrounding racial, sexual, & political issues.

Sam Rockwell - Moon. He's a great actor who should have been Oscar-nominated for his performance in this.

Moon has 90% on RT and is universally praised, how is it underrated?

The universal acclaim is what got me in the theater. But, it made little money, the DVD/Blu-ray/UHD didn't sell particularly well, it was on the movie channels for only about 2 months, and nobody ever talks about it.

Movie nerds, such as myself and the others on this site, know all about it. The masses do not.

How much money a movie makes and how long it was on the "movie channels" has nothing to do with it being underrated or not.

And a lot of people talk about it. There's more people than "movie nerds" and "the masses". It has even more IMDb ratings than Fast & Furious (2009) and is the seventeenth film with most ratings from 2009 if you want to measure stuff.

The conclusion is that it's neither underrated nor obscure or what you are trying to say.

I agree with this take. I enjoy & own the movie, but if anything, I find it too highly rated. My choice for Sam Rockwell would be Made.

Seven under-celebrated films that come to mind - and in each case the star mentioned did outstanding work:

Ashley Judd "Eye of the Beholder"(1999)
Ewan McGregor "Perfect Sense"(2011)
Penelope Cruz "The Counselor"(2013)
Colin Farrell "Cassandra's Dream"(2008)
Emily Blunt "The Wolfman"(2010)
Gong Li "Curse of the Golden Flower"(2006)
Bette Davis "Beyond the Forest"(1949)

Haven't seen "The Grey" or "The Drop" but I'll watch for them.
Totally agree with you about "By the Sea". The movie (directed by Angelina Jolie) is way under-rated. And Brad Pitt gives a terrific performance in it. Impressively delivering much of his dialogue in French, if I remember correctly.

Open Range - Kevin Costner.

Made decent money for a western and good level of critical praise.

Wish more in my circle have seen it; or importantly want to see it.

Yep, at least half. It's one of his best performances, maybe the best.

Cillian Murphy in Peacock. I think Murphy is a fairly underrated actor as is, but I think that may be one of his finest performances- he essentially plays two people. Haven't seen it in a few years, and I'm sure some of it may be rather problematic by now, but I'd say it's definitely worth a watch for those who haven't seen it, if only for his performance.

Jeff Bridges deservedly got an oscar nom for Starman but it's been pretty much overshadowed by later successes and overlooked somewhat in the nostalgia stakes next to Tron, for example.

He's great in it and so is Allen. And they make the movie great. Starman sometimes gets labelled E.T. for grown ups.... Yeah? So? If a rubber creature effect can move millions of people then so should an equally sympathetic story about a grown woman and a grown man (who is actually an alien more similar to a bird in its true form).

I'm gonna say Denzel Washington in MAN ON FIRE----

I know a lot of people appreciate the film but it wasn't a huge hit and reviews were mixed.

Washington gets so much acclaim for many other films, but this one is rarely mentioned. I think it's his greatest performance!

Recently re-visited this and it's such a great movie. I don't think it's his best performance (he's had so many great ones), but it's up there.
