A group of us watched this Friday night, we really enjoyed it which surprised me given the amount of negative reviews it has on the web. There are few parts one would deem "scary" (though there are 2 or 3 "jumpers") and a bit of over acting - I'll admit that lol, however we found it to be more of a psychological thriller / horror than a flat out horror movie. More forcing one to remember suppressed memories than a revenge flick. You can count the cast on a couple of hands and the majority of the movie is filmed in a single building leading me to believe the budget for this wasn't great, in this aspect I think Takashi did pretty well. Some of the effects like rain, rain drops stopping and floating, feathers, etc... These floating objects added in post production looked good but they messed up some of the depth layers for instance, a water drop that should be waaay back in the scene floats in front of a person that standing in the front of the scene, it causes confusion to your eyes because the thing that should be behind the actor is in front of him. Don't let that scare you out of this though, I only noticed it once or twice. I caught very little ghosting in a scene or two, not much though. Notably, this was filmed in High Definition 3D - the first Japanese film to do so, not a conversion, and it really shows. There are some great depth shots as well as some really well made pop out moments, some pops are out so far it was a little strenuous on the eyes. This film is in Japanese 5.1, subtitled in English. You can turn these titles off, there is also a dub track in English 5.1. As for the voice overs... well, compared to others I've heard they weren't toooo bad ![]() Over all, I'd give this a 3 out of 5. It was enjoyable and I'll watch it again down the road, more I can say for half the movies I own. For 19.99 (purchased at Best Buy), I'm satisfied with the purchase. Why no mention of Blu-ray 3D on the cover? Is it anaglyph?
There's a 3D trailer or clip on YouTube and I seem to remember that the depth looked good. Gae |

Gae - this is a full color 3d blu ray, not an anaglyph 3d version. Sorry I didn't specify. The copy I bought says 3d Blu Ray on the case however I couldn't find a .jpg link that had the same, I could only find the pic I hosted in post 1.
I could not find a stereoscopic version of the trailer, did find an example clip of the 3D in the film: |

That's the clip I saw. There may be another one too.

Major thread necro but I figured I'd post here just so a dissenting opinion could be heard:
Stay far, far away. I usually like Shimizu's work but this is a piece of crap. It's nonsensical and oddly-structured, which is pretty much the norm for him. But it was a puzzle I didn't care about solving at all because all the characters were paper-thin and poorly-acted, there was no atmosphere, suspense, or scares, and the plot was ridiculously uninvolving. There are a few really laughable moments, but not enough to make it a guilty pleasure. Mostly it's just a bore. The 3D is native and deep but also really poorly shot. It seems like the interaxial distance between the cameras was never adjusted, making for flat wide shots (not that there are many) and eye-gouging, hyperstereo close-ups. Lots of frame violations too, even on the showy "pop out" moments. Though the convergence on this thing is so bad that about 2/3 of the movie seems to take place outside of the screen - again, major headache inducer. Also, I'm assuming this isn't the case on the Blu-ray, but this is available on Netflix in 3D and is pretty much unwatchable in that format since there's no English dub and the subtitles stay at screen level. Since a majority of shots have foreground objects out of screen, this screws with the subtitles very badly and your brain WILL hate you. You need to close one eye to read the things anyway. Much more comfortable to stick to 2D. ...but really, you just shouldn't watch the movie at all. |

![]() ![]() This film is getting its debut Blu-ray release in Japan on February 10th, 2021. Supposedly, it has been "remastered" in "8K" and also apparently re-graded with HDR in 2K, even though it seems pointless to remaster a 2K digital film at 8K and it is being released as a 1080p Blu-ray that would not actually have HDR metadata. The 3D version is included as a "bonus", so it may not have been "remastered": Quote:
