Confirmed just now at the MGS 25th anniversary event, this will be a Hollywood production by Columbia pictures.

More details to follow.

Wow. Science Fiction classic in the making...

If adapted properly. The games feel a lot like films as it is. Damn hour long cutscenes and such.

Seems unnecessary, I just hope Hideo Kojima is supervising it. Wouldn't feel right for a director to take the vision of the game seeing as though it was crafted in the light of a movie by another director. That makes this pretty awkward, but I have always wanted to see a big adaptation of these games, there's alot of literature to them that's for sure.

Metal Gear Solid movie announced
Courtesy of Columbia Pictures

X-Men and Spider-Man producer Avi Arad announced at the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Japan that Metal Gear Solid is ready to become a movie.

There has been talk in the past of Metal Gear Solid making its way to Hollywood, but it never quite made it. Metal Gear designer Hideo Kojima did hint at a movie earlier this year, but suggested that the series wasn't ready to move into Hollywood just yet.

But clearly, now it is: Avi Arad took to the stage as a special guest at the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event and announced the Metal Gear movie.

Arad, the producer of X-Men and Spider-Man said "for many years I fought to bring comics to theaters...and video games are the comics of today."

Of all the games ever made, this is one that should be a total no brainer to be made into an epic movie.

Comics have been made in to some of the best selling films of all time now it's time for video game films to get the same treatment. This and Uncharted really should become best sellers.

The MGS games are already very cinematic. MGS4 has 1 cutscene thats 90mins long! Thats an entire feature film in itself

I wonder whether this'll be a straight adaptation of the first game (which I'd love) or something which'll take select elements and craft its own story, as most video game adaptations do. Let's hope they don't involve Christopher Nolan and/or Christian Bale in this! I know they'll be at the top of everybody's wish lists, but Nolan lacks the style and wit that I'd expect for a Metal Gear Solid film and Bale is just bland nowadays.

Fantastic news! I hope they can pull it off because as we know, games to movie adaptations fail consistantly.

Kojima has to be involved.

This could be a potential franchise in the way the Residant Evil films are but so, so much better.

The casting of Snake needs to be spot on. Speaking of which, who do people think could play Snake and do him justice?

I just want to say no to Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper right off the bat!

If he were about 10 years younger, I'd pick Kiefer Sutherland to play Snake. He can pull off that growly voice

I'm not sure how a feel about this. If they're straight up taking the first game, then they're going to need a hell of a script editor (along with some coverage of Metal Gear 1 and 2), plus if you take away too much from the crazy science fiction malarky and water it down, along with taking out the absurd humour, you'll lose the charm of the game.

Yet the potential is there, I'm very very cautious, yet very very optimistic...

We all know Snake was designed after Snake Pliskin, so there should only be one person for the role

or maybe

This is very exciting but I really don't see this working as a 'normal' 2 hr film. There is just too much to cram in and as a result it would become severely watered down and be worse off for it.

Ideally it needs to be like LOTR (for example) 3-4 hrs at least. It would be unreal if they did this for each game and make it a series of films. For now I hope they take the 1st (ps1) and totally make this happen and do it justice.

I don't know whether I'm excited by this news, I always thought the MGS series had great potential for feature films, but it needs to be done meticulously with such care, otherwise it could be a potential failure. Also how would they structure it? Will it be a straight adaptation of MGS3, or as someone else stated, would it be built on the story of several of the games?

As much as I'd like Kurt Russel to be Snake, I don't see it happening because of his age. Although he could play Big Boss in a sequel or something.

I say Christian Bale should be Snake.

I knew people would say Christian Bale... but the guy can't pronounce his S's.
"I'm stholid sthnake"

I'd want to see an unknown actor be Snake.
