Default RIP Family Video

Quote:
Before Netflix and Hulu, a typical weekend meant prowling around shelves packed with VHS tapes, DVDs and 2000s-era candy all in a fluorescent-lit setting.

Mirroring the sad tale of Blockbuster, Family Video — half video-rental store and half CBD seller — announced it'll be closing all stores by the end of the season nationwide.

One of the last companies dedicated to suburban stay-at-home entertainment through a physical store, Family Video will be liquidating everything until Feb. 20, multiple employees at Family Video locations across Michigan said.

Digital streaming, mixed with the pandemic, sucked revenue right from the video rental industry. Family Video was able to survive until this year when the company announced over 250 Family Video locations will shut its doors forever, WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) reports.

Many employees came back from the holidays only to find out they would lose their jobs in the upcoming month. In Michigan, there's over 30 Family Video stores scattered across the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The liquidation sale will include DVDs, video games, furniture and CBD.
