Default Bong joon-ho collection (17/03/2021)

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/b...n-2020-blu-ray

Looks pretty nice, and includes some shorts never before released on disc.

Shame they weren't able to get the rights from Netflix so include Okja (2017) for the release.

Wish Madman had also included the black and white disc for Parasite that they've included in their current 4K set.

Good question, I’m more interested in the short films and Memories, Barking Dogs, Mother pending extras

Yeah, it is a shame for those that have the rest of his movies already. Plus there’s no Snowpiercer. If this was complete and came in a nicer a box set I’d definitely get it for Okja and the bonuses. But madman box sets are cheap crap, unless they’re Studio Ghibli I guess

Barking Dogs, Memories Of Murder and Mother are scheduled for individual release in June.

The short films collection is exclusive to the box set.

So there are three films

Incoherence runs for about 30 minutes and is made up of four parts. Three episodes that initially seem disconnected from each other, and an epilogue which resolves the three into one. Like many student films, it has a simple narrative and message, but its direction highlights Bong's early promise as a director. If the story was better and the story telling was tighter, this would have been a great film. As it is, it was ok I guess. As an aside, I would be interested to know if Bong was influenced by Polish director Kieslowski, in particular if he saw Blind Chance before making this film since Bong's camera and the narrative itself is similar to Kieslowski's style.

Memories in My Frame, with a 5 minute runtime, is the shortest of the three films available in the set. More of a mood piece than a story. Nothing special.

Sink and Rise is 10 minutes long, though at least two minutes of it was spent on an overly long credits sequence styled after the game Space Invaders. Featuring a snappier direction, this comedy was alright. It seems like something Bong just thought about while he was walking or something, and decided to film it for fun. The song that plays in the end was really corny.

In terms of quality, Incoherence is a restored transfer so looks the best. It will probably be the same one Criterion uses for their Memories of Murder release. The other two shorts are really bad. Audio was fine.

God the artwork on that box set is awful, my 5 year old daughter is a better artist compared to whoever drew that. Madman have really gone to shit over the past few years, their Eastern Eye DVD boxsets used to be great and had actual artwork or pics from the films, they also used to take a lot of pride in their releases. I hate that they had to go woke and remove all traces of Eastern Eye from their releases as now my EE collection looks messed up with the missing spine logos. I shouldn't complain at least we are getting MOM on blu finally, but now my Eastern Eye DVD of Barking dogs is completely worthless lol.

That's great news as I already bought Parasite and The Host when they were released. Although come next 20% off sale it may work out cheaper just to buy the box than the 3 individual releases.

Does Eastern Eye actually exist anymore? I can't find it on their website. Used to be really good up until a few years ago. Madman as a whole used to be pretty top-notch. Dunno what the hell happened to them. It's a damn shame no-one gives a crap about Asian movies in the Aussie market. Icon used to have the Wu Xing collection as well and now they've got hardly anything.

What do you think of this one for cover art?

https://www.zavvi.com.au/blu-ray/bon.../12892903.html
Yeah that one is just as bad. It seems a lot of labels are using shitty hand drawn or computer done covers these days, just look art the Australian 4k release of Rambo compared to the US one, if they are going to do hand done artwork for covers I wish they would at least get someone who is actually good at it like Simon Sherry or Kung Fu Bob, for example.
Went woke as in they dumped the Eastern Eye logo off the covers of the last releases and then the label itself because they felt it was offensive.
And yes I fully agree with you and I was just having this conversation a few days ago, early 2000's we were inundated with quality Asian releases here in Aus but now we are lucky to get a few here and there which sucks, luckily we still have the option to import from the UK though.

Just picked this up and the ratio specs and runtime on Mother were different to my old UK Optimum release. So I checked the disc and the specs on the Madman slip seem to be wrong as both releases are the same as far as those go.

However, the Madman Mother does seem to be artificially brightened, with less deep blacks than the Optimum, so would suggest people to import that one if they are just after that film.

Memories of Murder seems to be a lot darker and less detailed than my Region-A locked Korean edition, however considering the price I paid for that and the need for a region free player (or Panasonic with the top-menu trick) it's probably worthwhile going for the local one, unless anyone wants to wait for the upcoming Criterion which will almost certainly be better. This French edition looks to be the same as the local one for anyone who'd like to see the difference.

No obvious differences with The Host
