I need help

I have a Vizio 42 inch plasma with a native resolution of 1024x768. My wife just bought me a ps3 and I was wondering which resolution is better for blu-ray films. 1080i or 720p and why? Thanks to anyone who can help.

That is a trick question. Some people debate 720p is better, others say 1080i. Try both settings with the same film and pick according to what you feel looks best.

You'll want to watch movies in 720p. Interlaced signals (the little 'i') put up half the lines every cycle. So on a 1080i signal, you hare having 540 lines produced alternating to create the picture. you'll get much smoother picture with progressive signals (little "p") because in 720p, 720 lines are put up on the screen at once. This will result in better overall and more lifelike quality because the picture is put up on the screen intact. I'll track down some links on cnet and other places where i've read this.

Blu-rays look great in 720p. However, some sets handle 1080i better than others. Give both a shot with the same Blu-ray source material to determine which appears better to you on your set.
