It's doubtful this release will be of much use to anyone who isn't fluent in Japanese, but I'm starting a thread anyway because it's Godzilla!

It's a long shot indeed but I too have a tiny bit of hope they will. They never have in the past, but this one is a bit different in that it was made with more of an international appeal in mind, made after a successful Hollywood reboot and was a huge box office success in Japan, so maybe they'll go the extra mile? Time will tell.

If not, I wonder if there's any possibility whatsoever there will be a UHD release anywhere else in the world?

I hope it has English subtitles. I'd definitely be interested if it does. No way does Funimation put out a 4K version.

IIRC Funimation has distribution rights for this in the US. They don't do anything in UHD at the moment but I guess anything is possible...

Available for pre-order at Amazon Japan. Two listings. As I understand it, the more expensive one is a steelbook release.

what's the sound, I saw this on the large screen at Angelika Mosaic and the mix was very understated.

From the Amazon page(s) Viking61 linked to:

"(1)日本語3.1ch dts-HD Master Audio
(2)日本語2.0ch dts-HD Master Audio"

Only Japanese subtitles, as expected. Guess we'll just have to wait for Funimation, Madman, etc. to release it in the West. Hopefully not too long after the Japanese release!

Here are the relevant database entries:

Yep, I was going to say the same thing. This info comes straight from Toho themselves so it should be accurate.

Ordered the UHD Steelbook. I have zero confidence Funi will do a UHD release, and I won't pass up Godzilla in 4K. I can live without subtitles.

If IMDB is right it was mastered at 2K despite all the higher source material?

ARRIRAW (3.4K) (2.8K) (source format)
Canon H264 (4K) (source format)
Digital Intermediate (2K) (master format)
Redcode RAW (5K) (source format)

Toho have now updated their site for the UHD/Blu-ray release.

If I'm reading Google's bad translation of Japanese correctly, it seems that there will be "only" 139 minutes of bonus content on the standard bonus Blu-ray (which appears to be a BD-25), including almost thirty minutes of promos, trailers and TV spots, as well as several longer videos from premieres and screenings.

But, there will be 193 minutes of bonus content on the Special Edition Blu-ray. Including a 28-minute previsualization reel, 20 minutes of special effects outtakes, over an hour's worth of alternate and deleted scenes, 35 minutes of TV footage (shot for the film), an 18-minute VFX breakdown, and a 31-minute Making Of featurette.

Additionally, the UHD BD still appears to be a BD-66, with only the film onboard. I think it will also come in its own separate case attached to the Blu-ray Digipack, but I'm not sure if I'm translating that correctly.

UHD/BD combo:
