Maniac Driver (2022) - Blu-ray Forum

Maniac Driver is a new Japanese Giallo by director Kurando Mitsutake.

In some places it's listed as a 2021 film but my understanding is that only some preview screenings were shown in 2021, and the mainstream release was in January? (correct me if I'm wrong on the info).

The trailer kind of caught my eye as it looks very inspired by Dario Argento and Mario Bava. Reviews in Japan do mention that it's actually closer to Lucio Fulcio and I've seen at least one reviewer call it the Japanese New York Ripper, so it may not be for everyone.

Also for some reason it looks like it's getting a German blu ray release (with English subtitles).

Really looking forward to this, have liked everything that Kurando Mitsutake has done so far and this has a great 80s sleaze feel to it. I know people are selling it as a Giallo but it's got serious 80s Maniac and New York Ripper meets Roman Porno vibes.

I've seen some reviews and got interested, I guess advertising it as a giallo is somewhat misleading but it looks like such insane and stylish mixture of my favourite genres that I just had to put preorder of german mediabook in. Waiting for next month...

I managed tto get this one outta my backlog just couple of days ago and unfortunately I ended up absolutely hating it. I don"t even know exactly why: Basically it was a total eye candy and had everything needed from leather gloves to gore, nudity and plot twists, but somehow everything was done just wrong. Dunno, if I've had watched it just as common horror/asian flick it could've worked much better, but all those giallo references I've had seen earlier ruined it for me as from such a point of view it failed blatantly being a plain, and wrongly thrown together, carbon copy of old classics.

I just realized this is from the same guy that did Karate Kill which though flawed I still found entertaining. I'll have to give it a shot.
