Reopening Hollywood: How Zendaya, John David Washington & ‘Euphoria’ Creator Sam Levinson Started & Finished A Secret Movie During The Pandemic

EXCLUSIVE: Even though there’s been a couple of notable film productions recently jockeying for the distinction of being the first in the U.S. to go before the cameras following the COVID-19 shutdown, we can tell you first that a brand new Zendaya-John David Washington movie from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, Malcolm & Marie, has been shooting quietly all along during the pandemic. It has already completed production — arguably the first to do so on the feature film side.

Filming for Malcolm & Marie took place between June 17-July 2 at the Caterpillar House, an environmentally conscious glass architectural marvel in Carmel, CA – all compliant with WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA approvals and COVID-19 safety protocols.

While the pic’s logline is largely under wraps, I hear the movie has some echoes of Netflix’s Marriage Story, while resonating a number of social themes that the world is experiencing right now.

I'm very interested. Loved Assassination Nation and love Euphoria. But 30 Million seems like a lot. The other interested parties were really willing to go that high that Netflix had to pay 30 Million? Regardless good for Levinson.

Not only that, the sale was based on a promo. The film isn’t actually finished yet.

Because Netflix's plate is waaay too full this season.
They already have contenders in Actor category like Boseman, Oldman, and Lindo.
Same for Actress (Davis, Kirby, Loren, and Streep).
These movies will hurt and cannibalize each other.

Well, it’s not like competition is fierce this year, Normadland is the only thing big studios have up their sleeve after Tenet struggled to breakout. The more spinning plates the more they could land, particularly this year where it’s easily going to be their biggest shot at landing a win.

Probably, but it is still streamers year to lose. Particularly if/when 2021 is going to be aiming as a bounce back year for theatrical distribution.
