Default Playstation 5 to use 100GB UHDs, double as 4k blu ray player

https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-playstation-5/

Quote:
But data adds up too. "If you look at a game like Marvel's Spider-Man," Cerny says, "there are some pieces of data duplicated 400 times on the hard drive." The SSD sweeps away the need for all that duping—so not only is its raw read speed dramatically faster than a hard drive, but it saves crucial space. How developers will take advantage of that space will likely differ; some may opt to build a larger or more detailed game world, others may be content to shrink the size of the games or patches. Either way, physical games for the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks, inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Bluray player.
Really great news for the format. We saw what PS2 did for DVD, and what PS3 did for 1080p Blu ray. Happy to see next-gen consoles (well, at least this one) aren't looking to go all-digital.

I'll just wait for the inevitable PS5 Pro. I already learned my lesson after purchasing a standard PS4 two months before the PS4 Pro was announced.

I think i've seen a rumor that the "pro" will be released same time. there will be a cheaper (regular) and more expensive (pro) models at launch.

Yep, this made me very happy. The format can use all the help it can get, and this is certainly more reassuring than the alternative would have been, i.e., if Sony had decided against including a UHD drive.

Good to see that both Microsoft Xbox variations and Sony PlayStation 5 will both support native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

100gb replication going to go through the roof. No excuse not to have every UHD with a 100gb feature disc.

Also one day videogame developers will start using 66GB and 100GB optical discs for the increased storage capacity.

There back catalogue of releases have been few and far between lately, like most other studios. Maybe now they might get serious and we may see more titles released on UHD in the near future, but seriously, I have my doubts.

This is a huge deal for the future of 4K UHD. I would assume that PS5 will do just as well as PS4 did and be the dominant console yet again. This puts a 4K player in everyone's home which will allow for a greater push to UHD.

While I think we are doing pretty well with releases, this gives the format that extra push and expect more companies to commit to catalogue releases.

If a movie doesn't need a triple stacker then it doesn't need it, but credit where it's due: you said that 4K drives and 100GB discs would be part of the next gen gaming spec and you were spot on.

It’s definitely a good sign that they are supporting the format.

I would not say it was that insightful. I'm more proud of the fact from 04 till 07 I was telling people the banks were going to collapse cause there was to much toxic credit. And that's why I refused to get a credit card

Often called crazy....till it happened.

Why the reporter seems so excited about the use of an SSD? I had one installed on my PS4 (till I sold it, I then put its original HDD back in) and it loaded the tracks of Project Cars in a matter of a few seconds. And that was 4 years ago.

It's supposed to be a next generation of SSD.
