Marvel's superheroes are about to get a bit bigger on your TV. Disney+ announced today that it's adding an expanded IMAX aspect ratio for 13 Marvel titles, including*Shang-Chi*and*Black Panther,*on November 12th (AKA "Disney+ Day"). The 1.90:1 IMAX aspect ratio will look up to 26 percent taller than the typical 2.35:1 widescreen format in Marvel films, so those annoying black bars will almost disappear while you're watching scenes shot in IMAX. (You'll still see some slight bars, though, as the IMAX format doesn't completely fill 16x9 widescreen TVs.)
The expanded aspect ratio should give Marvel's action sequences more room to pop on your TV, and it's a feature Disney+ can lord over its streaming competitors. Technically, IMAX Enhanced isn't delivering the large film format's true aspect ratio, which is more square. But, as we saw with*Zack Snyder's Justice League, that leads to enormous black bars on the sides of your TV. It's also worth noting that we won't see IMAX versions of*The Avengers*and*Ant-Man, as those are the rare Marvel films that used the TV-filling 1.85:1 aspect ratio (a choice made to convey a better sense of height). Looking ahead, IMAX Enhanced will also bring immersive DTS sound to Disney+, a competing option to the more ubiquitous Dolby Atmos format. Representatives from all of the companies involved tell us that IMAX Enhanced films will also support Dolby Vision, HDR10, 4K (naturally) and Dolby Atmos sound. Quote:

Good luck with that. This is kind of bad, actually. This is a deliberate move to push more to streaming.
At best, customer’s digital copies that they redeemed when they bought the 4K disc of a Marvel film “might” get upgraded to the IMAX version but I SERIOUSLY doubt that. Going forward, I have no doubt that every Marvel film will get his treatment on Disney+ and not on disc. And if that happens, this forum is going to let Disney have it. |

Even worse for me, I discovered when I rented Black Widow at release that D+ will only allow the Atmos track if you are watching on a 4k display, if you are watching at 1080p you can only get the DD+ track. My pj is 1080p and I don't intend to upgrade any time soon (4k Blu-ray still looks noticeably better at 1080p than regular Blu-ray, so I'm still all-in on 4k Blu-ray, plus the Atmos tracks are often only on the 4k disc). So even IF I wanted to watch these IMAX streaming versions, I can't get them in Atmos! |

Honestly this is a bit gimmicky. The directors of these films made the films mainly with a 2.40:1 AR in mind. I remember watching both Infinity War and Endgame in both Laser IMAX and a Dolby Cinema (which use the 2.40:1 AR instead of the taller AR) and much preferred the Dolby Cinema versions. The picture quality was slightly better and audio was better too. And nothing felt missing from the different AR in Dolby because a lot of that extra picture is just empty information. If it had truly been important the rest of the releases (disc, other streaming sites) would have received the taller AR too.
It makes sense for 3D because it creates a more immersive picture for the 3D itself, but in regular 2D it’s almost, if not completely, worthless at home. I think this is just IMAX and DTS trying to stay relevant in the home video market. |

I think this is good news for disc lovers as well. I would say a year after Disney+ gets to promote this exclusive, they will offer these versions on disc to get the video enthusiasts to double dip.
