Which of these directors do you prefer? I can't really decide because I guess I like them both about the same. Their films are usually weird and disturbing but in different ways. Different style, but same strenght.
Edit: I choose Fincher upon my rewatch of Gone Girl and The Game. Last edited by Darthvaderrocks; 01-27-2021 at 07:17 AM. |

Lynch operates in a whole separate realm from Fincher or just about anybody else.
If you'd asked me around the time of THE GAME, I might have paused, because I thought Se7en was the best movie of the 90s and his followup to that was pretty great (I still rewatch THE GAME once or twice each year.) But Fincher's output has been a huge disappointment to me this century. I don't 'get' SOCIAL NETWORK or ZODIAC or BUTTON at all, and downright hated PANIC ROOM. MANK is, well, problematic in its take on history and Welles, who seems to take as much crap dead as he did while alive, which is saying a lot. With Lynch, just looking at all the versions of TWIN PEAKS, plus LOST HIGHWAY and MULHOLLAND DRIVE, would be enough to kick him to the head of the class. Even so, I know I'll never watch WILD AT HEART a second time, and I've accepted that I'm never going to make it through INLAND EMPIRE even once, though god knows I've tried a number of times, but most of the time, his work is immensely interesting and challenging. I probably rewatch Lynch as much as I rewatch more traditional fare like TINKER TAILOR (which is like MAD magazine in terms of the number of subtle details that pop up on repeat viewings) or Connery/Dalton Bond films. Fincher. Other than Twin Peaks, I don't like anything Lynch did.
