Yes, it's not one of Lean's classics. It's no Lawerance of Arabia or Bridge over a River Kwai but I really like the themes of the movie. |

I think it's better than Zhivago, but it showed that Lean kind of forgot how to make a movie without massive scope. It really has more in line with his earlier, smaller movies like The Passionate Friends and Brief Encounter than Lawrence of Arabia.
I just never saw any reason it should be more than 3 hours long, and the stuff that gets it to that length often feels really extraneous. Lawrence and Bridge, though long, never felt like they were wasting seconds, much less minutes. Still, I think it's nothing like a complete disaster that Kael et al called it. There's a lot worthwhile, but early Lean would have taken that story and made a much smaller and even better movie than late Lean. |

After seeing both of them in original release I had the same opinion that you state here. But in subsequent re-viewings (the last just a couple of years ago) "Dr. Zhivago" has risen considerably in my esteem. I have not seen "Ryan's Daughter" since seeing a cut print in the "MGMs Fabulous Four" release of 1971. I wasn't happy with that showing since a key John Mills scene that I had seen in the roadshow version the year before was gone.
I honestly don't know which I would prefer now if I watched them back to back. Last edited by Geode; 12-10-2022 at 04:17 PM. |

If you saw it in the theater in 70mm (it was shot in Super Panavision 70) you can really appreciate the film. On home video - nah. It loses too much of it's grandure

Hopefully, a restored version is released. A testament to the movie that I love it despite only watching a broadcast version of the movie.
