Default Lovely to Look At - Beautiful Lookng Vintage films on Blu-ray

I’ve always had a soft spot for the intense Technicolor – rich and vivid - that was once the norm in movies. As the 60’s turned into the 70’s, film-makers embraced a more realistic palette, favoring a grittier, greyer look. That’s a trend that continues till today. Sure, there’s the occasional hallucinogenically eye-popping exception like “Suspiria”. But – for the most part – filmmakers and audiences have bought into the drably realistic model.
Thanks to Blu-rays and some loving restorations of old favorites we’ve got more chances now to revel again in that old Technicolor high. Here are 15 Blu-rays I own and love. I enjoy the movies themselves but they also function as wonderful eye-candy. Love diving in and luxuriating in the sheer beauty of the visuals.
I’ve only included pre-1960 titles. Including a couple of wonderful two strip Technicolor delights from the early talkie era.
I like the cut-price Cinecolor process, too (which flourished from ’45 to ’52). With its wonderful blend of pine-needle greens and earth-tones, it was perfect for westerns. Technicians did a fine job of restoring Randolph Scott’s “Canadian Pacific” from dreadfully problematic elements and Kino’s given us a solid Blu-ray version. But the most beautiful Cinecolor I’ve ever seen is on the DVD of Scott’s “Albuquerque”(Paramount ’48). Hopefully Kino will give it to us in Blu someday. Also looking forward to the promised Blu-ray release of Monograms’s “Flight to Mars”, another Cinecolor favorite of mine.
In the meantime, here are some lovely vintage color films that my Blu-ray player and I can’t get enough of:
