This is a great article. Really enjoyed reading it. I can't believe that HD Dud PG really sent that email. They need to be stopped ASAP, better yet, yesterday

The usual well thought out, reasoned words from Bill. Sadly, the red zealot translation will make it sound like Bobcat Goldthwait on a caffeine bender to their ears. They are so far beyond logic and reason that it is just pathetic. Luckily, there are plenty of us HDM fans and reasonable folks in the industry that appreciate logic and honesty.

I just hope that the retail and industry publications pressure will get through the wall of fantasy that Toshiba seems to have built for themselves. There has to be some in the upper echelons of Toshiba that see through their own propaganda and still have some clue of what is going on in the real world outside of their corporate fairy tale world.

I keep getting this mental picture of the highest level Toshiba execs as the bunkered down generals in a war that is already lost and the advisors that put them on the path they are following keep feeding them positive reports in order to keep their heads from ending up on the block.

"No general, no need to risk your safety. You can depend on us, the war will be won any day now. Just stay here in the bunker where it is safe. We will keep you informed as always."

Chris

What more logic does the Red Camp need to see the error of their ways?
  • 75% studio support for Blu-ray exclusively
  • 52+ weeks of software sales going to Blu-ray
  • Hardware sales turning in favor of Blu the last month-and-a-half
  • CE stores selling HD DVD players for upconverting purposes
  • CE stores telling consumers they are not stocking many more HD DVD players
  • CE companies moving HD DVDs out to make room for Blu-rays
  • Amazon graphs showing that Blu-ray has been dominating since after Christmas (even after drops in HD DVD player retail prices)
Sorry, I know I'm preaching to the choir, but let's get realistic...which way do you think new consumers are going to go?

BILL'S ARTICLE IS A MUST READ!!!!

HD Logic that I read daily:

1. Toshiba is planning something HUGE to turn the studio support tide. Just wait.

or

Hardware sales are still huge. There's no way studios can't take notice.

2. NPD doesn't count venues like Wal-mart and Amazon. If they did the nubers would only be something like 60/40 blu. They only spread FUD

3. (See 2)

4. "That's a great strategy. They are great upconverters and once people start exploring the HD side of it software sales will turn around.

5 and 6. That's just anecdotal FUD.

7. Amazon is hardly the whole market.

From the article:

"Since Toshiba's retail price move on Jan. 13th to $149 / $199 - Toshiba is seeing very positive sales trends at retail. This reinforces the fact that price is a significant driver of sales."

Fire sales tend do tend to move product, what's your point, honey?

Utterly meaningless.

Everything you've stated, I've heard for the one billionth time by certain FUD-spreading users on other forums.

And again, that is skewed thinking, not logic. Everything Bill has said in his argument is true by logical standards, not through Red or Blu colored glasses...everything the HD DVD PG group said they'd have to their advantage has fallen by the wayside. Again, I'm preaching to the choir, but there is such a thing as blind faith, but this is just being blind.

Edit: Everything that the HD DVD PG group has said would be an advantage also includes TF...it still wasn't enough to allow them to win a week and it didn't outsell the Blu-ray version of 300.

I was saying that the Email regarding the sales figures that were sent to various entities wasn't necessary and didn't accomplish anything other than making the organization appear more foolish. As far as your reference to the fire sale, I had made no mention of it. Personally, find the fire sale to be in poor taste because it is taking advantage of consumers.

I have one major disagreement with Bill Hunt:

Quote:
We believed then [in June 2007] that backing Blu-ray was the right decision, both for us and for our readers. Our advice to them was simple: Either stay on the sidelines (the recommended option) or, if you were going to risk getting into high-def, Blu-ray seemed to us the better option. That continues to be our advice.
Perhaps it is just poorly worded, but it sure seems to say that the official advice of thedigitalbits.com as of today is to stay on the sidelines unless you're willing to take a risk, and only in that situation do they advise going with Blu-ray.

If Bill Hunt wants an end to the format war, the advice of thedigitalbits.com should be to back Blu-ray and not to support HD DVD. There is very little risk in backing Blu-ray, especially if all these people sitting on the sidelines begin taking the plunge today.

LOL...it is badly worded, but he was meaning that at the time the recommended course of action was to stay on the side-lines until it was more apparent who was going to win. If you read the paragraph, he was talking it past tense.

Edit: But remember, Bill isn't a spelling or grammar aficionado...of course, we could all use some work on our English and slowing down to express ourselves.

Oh, now a low attachment rate is a good thing?

They count Amazon. As I pointed out in another thread, the HD DVD fans shrieked about the Amazon BD BOGO sales skewing the results, so it puzzles me how they conveniently "forget" that Amazon is counted when there are no sales or there is an HD DVD BOGO on Amazon.

Hopefully you're not encountering too many people making these goofy claims.

I started to point that out as well. They also are supposed to have a formula to include what would have been sold at Wal-Mart, if my memory recollects what I've heard from Insiders.
