French label Pathe will release on Blu-ray Raymond Bernard's Wooden Crosses a.k.a. Les croix de bois (1932), starring Pierre Blanchar, Gabriel Gabrio, Charles Vanel, Raymond Aimos, Paul Azais, and Marc Valbel. The release will be available for purchase on November 12th.
Wooden Crosses was restored in 4K by L'Immagine Ritrovata Bologna. Earlier this year, Pathe introduced the new restoration in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Synopsis: Hailed by the New York Times on its Paris release as "one of the great films in motion-picture history," Wooden Crosses, France's answer to All Quiet on the Western Front, still stuns with its depiction of the travails of one French regiment during World War I. Using a masterful arsenal of techniques, from haunting matte paintings to jarring documentarylike camera work in the film's battle sequences, Bernard created a pacifist work of enormous empathy and chilling despair. No one who has ever seen this technical and emotional powerhouse has never been able to forget it.
Note: In the United States, Wooden Crosses is currently available via Criterion's Eclipse Series 4: Raymond Bernard DVD box set.
