I was intrigued by this and the other title released by this indie studio. Hopefully their prices are wallet-friendly.

Miike is a lovely person and an amazing craftsman -- at least according to him -- which makes the scope and the depth of his output truly stunning. America hasn't had directors like him since the end of the studio system. And his work is always worth watching, even when it doesn't gel completely.
This sounds like a wonderful title, and is yet another Miike film I haven't seen. So it sounds like a blind preorder. ![]() |

Slightly off topic but Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django is going to released soon. It's a Western and features a supporting role by Quentin Tarantino.

I was thinking of creating a new thread, but this should suffice.
As far as I know, ArtsMagic (the company set to release this title) folded sometime in 2008. The company exists today, but they seem to be focused on documentaries. I am wondering how far along they were in getting this ready for release? Is it possible that someone could come along and get this released or was no work completed and it was just planned? I am just wondering if it could be an easy release for say Arrow who has done a few Miike releases. It might not be 100% in the realm of what people associate Miike with, but it's a decent movie. In all honesty, I guess the work could be done but no one really wants to put it out because the transfer may not be that great. So, does anyone have any information on this title? |

Out of curiosity I watched a poor PQ version of this on YT (had English subtitle).
The film definitely goes off the beaten path. While I do agree that this is a decent movie, I cannot blame the theatres for overlooking it. Even in Japan I doubt this would be a crowd pleaser. At best it would have had some attendance at art movie festivals. None of these movies played in my population of ~50k local cinema: Parasite, Burning, A Hidden Life, Three Billboards Outside..., Isle of Dogs, The House That Jack Built, or The Favourite. Bird People is in a niche, of another niche, in a smaller niche and not in English. It was destined for non-fame so respects to Miike for attempting such a film. I would say Bird People IC would be in the similar obscure realm as: Hard To Be A God Long Day's Journey Into The Night Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter (especially this) |
