I was just wondering this today - wouldn't it be interesting to be present at the pitch meetings for certain movies?

Imagine the things which were discussed when the screenwriters were selling their ideas to the studio executives.

I wished I was there for the pitches for:

One Million Years B.C.
Yellow Submarine
Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope)
Lifeforce
Showgirls
Strange Days
Scream
Face/Off
Crank

*the only film on this list that I dislike

Try reducing these films to a simple 30 second pitch that makes any sense. I wouldn't blame the producer, who after listening to the director with the idea, asked if you were in need of urgent medical attention.

To be fair, the pretty interesting thing about that one was when it was set to be directed by Spike Jonze, both he and Kaufman pitched it as a straight horror film.

Interesting. Maybe something in it works, if you view it as a horrifying descent into mental illness of some sorts. But I know that wasn't what Kaufman was aiming for. Maybe it's his most personal film to date (inspired from his own experience with writers block/creative difficulties/low self esteem), which explains a lot if you know his films.

Not quite a pitch meeting, but every meeting and decision made regarding 2017's Justice League. Being a fly on the wall of that entire production would be worth every penny I have amassed in my lifetime so far.

I'd like to have been at every single meeting at every level of production where they signed off on "SAVE MARTHA!!!" as a good idea.
