Default Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse (German Folk-Horror)

Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse
(GER/AUT 2017)

written & directed by
Lukas Feigelfeld

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7323600

Quote:
Lukas Feigelfeld’s arty folk-horror debut is a grim fairy tale about women shunned and vilified as witches during Europe’s Dark Ages.

Hollywoodreporter:
Quote:
Anyone who found the deranged cannibalistic excesses of Darren Arofonsky’s mother! a little too vanilla should feast their senses on the deliciously dark flavors of Hagazussa: A Heathen’s Curse. An atmospheric folk-horror fable that combines an constant undertow of creeping dread with a striking avant-gothic visual style, it marks the feature debut of Vienna-born, Berlin-based director Lukas Feigelfeld. I'm just now hearing about this. It looks pretty damn good and definately going to have to import the German blu ray.

Edit: Just bought this through Rare Waves on eBay for $18.78. I can't wait to watch it.

I received and watched the BD today. It's an outstanding movie, very atmospheric and dreamlike, with a great score and sound design. I'm already looking forward to watching it again soon.

I watched Hagazussa and loved it. It reminded me of hearing old folk tales/scary stories as a kid. This feeling hit me when Albrun, the main character, was at the marsh with her baby. Think about it, when you were a kid, or at least when I was a kid, I heard old stories very similar to this:
[Show spoiler]"One time there was this lady living out in the woods who went crazy and drowned her baby and then ate it. Everybody says she was a witch. They even say she put a dead rat in the drinking water and peed in it."

I love supernatural horror that deals with the occult, but for this film they left that aspect ambiguous, which works very well for the film.

The last shot is great.
[Show spoiler]When she burst into flames I interpreted it as the village burning her for what she did to her baby.

With the ambiguity of the supernatural element and that last shot, I thought of how we can easily be conditioned by society into what we become.

This film is a very slow burn. It is well crafted with great editing and beautiful cinematography, and the score is amazing. It has excellent build up and dreadful tension. If you like The Witch, Antichrist, or the like, definately give this a shot.

Totally sold. That teaser was incredible, and the cinematography looked just wonderful.

Off to find this to order.

EDIT: Did anyone order the Limited Edition? Despite taking two semesters of German, I can't really read that page. Just wondering what the differences are. Anyone read German? Heh.

Thank you very much!

Though, I'm guessing unless I order Babble, that booklet won't probably do me much good in the end. Heh.
