I'll get this just for the Jennifer Connelly scenes, glad to see it finally make it's way to blu.

Excellent news! DP Ueli Steiger was quite critical of the colour timing on the Shout Factory release, so hopefully this new master has met with his approval

Yeah, that Shout scan was off-putting to say the least, and I ended up keeping my dvd dub since it was so drastically changed. Would be glad to get rid of both, I did myself a huge non-favor and watched Killing Me Softly since it was on there and wish I had those 100 or so minutes of life back to do something fun with, like hit my head with a hammer.

Besides Connelly, I would say Virginia Madsen has never looked hotter than she was in this either. Great flick made better with awesome nudity.

Nice. I was slightly bummed that I missed out on the Shout blu-ray, looks like it was probably a good thing based on what other people are saying about the color timing.

Have to admit I've got a real fondness for Dennis Hopper's slow-burn Texas noir, with its beguiling B-movie mix of sex and chicanery; Don Johnson's drifter makes for a charismatic, sardonic anti-hero, and brunette stunner Jennifer Connelly's virginal nice girl is a nice contrast to Virginia Madsen's conniving blonde sexpot (the underrated Madsen is a hoot in this). William Sadler as a redneck sleaze is as reprehensible as one would want from a villain in this type of film. Can finally retire my old MGM DVD.

It's a bit overlong, but it's well-done, smolderingly sexy pulp and has an effectively cynical twist at the conclusion...and Jack Nitzsche's bluesy score is terrific.

I didn't have time to finish listening to it, but what were his issues with the earlier Shout releasing from the MGM HD master?

I never saw the film theatrically, but having spent time in Texas, I thought the look of the film on that disc captured the look of that part of the country.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!

One of my favourite neo-noirs. I already own both the Shout disc (which was cruelly paired with Killing Me Softly *shudder*) and the recent German disc but I won't hesitate to get this Day One.

Good thing I waited. I was about to pull the trigger on the Shout Factory one a few times but I don`t like the double movie releases and avoid them if I can.

The best movie to watch when it's crazy hot and the movie that'll make you want to start smoking.

I know another fan you'll have to go find and kill. He loves Killing Me Softly, but I'm not sure how much of it he watches... pretty sure he just has it for the nude bits of Heather Graham and isn't that enough for anyone to watch it

Maybe if Boogie Nights and the internet didn't exist, but they both do so it's worthless IMO.

I posted this in the Kino thread but i'll include it here too. I've transcribed the relevant portion of that podcast as it relates to The Hot Spot's history on home video in case people don't want to listen to the whole thing -

Quote:
"There was a VHS, which was a decent VHS transfer how they did it 30 years ago. It was done in the wrong format - it was done full frame and not in 1.66:1. The film was shot in 1.66:1*. And then I hear that the blu-ray came out so I went and bought it and it was very disappointing because they timed all the extreme colour out. They didn't ask anybody. I wasn't involved, nobody was involved. They want to make it look normal. The film wasn't normal so actually the old VHS looks, colour-wise, a lot better. It's not so bad, at least the film still has a life but it's a pity that you don't see it right."
*Now this is very interesting. I don't know if he misspeaks here, but he says it was shot in 1.66:1 - and not once, but twice. Which, if true blows my mind since i've always assumed it was intended to be shown 1.85:1.

Anyway, it seems Ueli Steiger would love to be involved. Hopefully Kino have been/will be in touch with him

Thumbs up Good film

I have the Shout twofer but I'm in for a 2K scan. Pretty sure the only xtra so far for this film has been the trailer & a booklet with the German blu, so some new xtras would be welcome too.
