The oldest theater in town has reopened (it's a revival theater) with a new screen and I noticed that whenever they show 2.39:1 widescreen films there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, just like when you are watching them on TV. I had never noticed this in a theater before. I was wondering if some movie screens are different aspect ratios than others. I seemed to think that all movie screens were for 2.39:1 films and that 1.85:1 films just took up less space on the sides of the screen.
