Default Screen drops outs with receiver at 4k

Anyone else having issues using a receiver with the PS5? I’m using an Onkyo TXNR-636, and it’s dropping the picture randomly every 3-10 seconds. Thought it was the older spec cords I was using, so I bought new 8k 48bgps cables, which I ran from ps5 to receiver and receiver to TV. Also made sure to use the 4K/60 hdcp 2.2 ports on both. No luck.

Everything works fine if I go straight to the TV. It’s only the receiver. I tried turning off HDCP, the different 4K transfer rates, and different display settings. The receiver is in HDMI pass through, etc.. The only thing that stopped the drop outs was dropping it to 1080p.

What gives?

My PS4 does this every now and then. If you're sure your cables are good, try power cycling the TV with the console and receiver already on. It works like a charm for me.

Yeah, no issues with cables when direct to tv. Power cycling didn’t get it. Thanks though. Unfortunately this is probably just (somewhat) old tech not playing nice with brand new tech, but it’s still annoying since, in theory, it all should work fine.

Try using a different HDMI port to see if that fixes it.
Onkyos have a reputation of having faulty HDMI ports.
My TX-RZ620 had the same problem.

My PS5 says the HDCP is 2.3

That shouldn’t be an issue for you & others I think?

So a faulty HDMI port on the receiver I guess.

The 636 only has one hdcp 2.2 port (may also be the only hdmi 2.0 also, not sure). For grins I did try it on another port though; it just goes black.

I noticed the same 2.3 and wondered if that was an issue with 2.2 ports, but that’s likely not the case as the TV is only 2.2 and it hasn’t had an issue.

I don;'t have a receiver but the picture from the PS5 drops out all the time if I have it on 4K. PS4 was also problematic at 4K but nowhere near as bad. Hasn't happened even one single time with my Oppo or Series X.
