Default Lcd/dlp/plasma Vs. Projection/projector

So as far as watching blu's and playing ps3 games which is better? an hdtv set or an hdtv projector with say like a 80 or 100" white screen?

Talking Projector

If you have the room and space I would suggest a DLP style Projector. Look into a Vidikron Vision 30 (1080i) or Vision 65 (1080p). We have a Vision 110 with the autoscope lens option at my Custom AV shops Theater and it f----ing rocks!

I agree that projector is the clear winner if you have the proper setup. Otherwise, plasma has the nicest picture but could be a costly and painful headache if anything goes wrong.

I chose LCD on the shear premise that, in the case of repairs, it is all mechanical and would only need parts replacement. Plasma is a liquid. If it leaks it will make a mess. Also, it makes the TV itself MUCH heavier. And if the plasma liquid itself ever needs replacement it will cost almost as much as you paid for the TV and take *up to* 3 months to fix since it has to be shipped off.

With a little bias aside, nothing beats watching movies then a front projection system....

I own a 1080p projector shooting on a 140 inch screen, and I personally think the colors and image presentation are much better then most TV's I have seen at the stores, and the couple of DLPs that I personally own.

I will admit that Plasmas offer an excellent picture, but not a picture that I would call "movie like."

Watching a Bluray on a nice 1080p projector is like watching a movie in a really well equipped theater...

A lot of people are coming to appreciate that qualities that a TV presents in its picture, but I think there is an extremely visceral difference between a great TV and a great projector...

Cable TV through a projector is very hit and miss though, I will admit that...

If you are a gamer though, nothing beats it...

When everyone comes over for some Call of Duty 4, we all get our own 70 inch screens when we split screen it with four people...

Couple beers, some pizza, and COD4 is awesome...

Last time I was in a movie theater my experience was: Sitting in a dark room, watching a large picture projected onto a screen.

Which home equipment gives the closest approximation to that?

Front projection is a much more a cinematic experience for me. I watch 'Scope pictures at 130 inches diagonally. For movies I'd have a very difficult time going back to a TV. For sports, etc. where you want to have some lights on, FP may not work so well.

I'm spoiled. When I walk into Sam's Club and see those 61 inch DLPs, they look small to me.

Unless you have a dedicated home theater, arranging things for FP can be a bit of a challenge. That said, I've lived in three different residences in the last two years and was able to use my projector in all of them with very little trouble. You just have to decide what works the best for you.

I'm obviously the AV nerd in our house, but since getting a projector, ALL the rest of the family clamour to watch films on the PJ.

I used to have a 50" plasma BTW. I had a good look at the Pio Kuro PDPs recently, and they're great, but they're not the real thing.

Plasma is like millions of tiny CRT's. Plasma refers to the inert gas in each pixel. Each pixel has a seperate red green and blue chamber in which an electrical discharge causes the gas to emit ultraviolet light. The high-energy ultraviolet light is absorbed by the red blue or green phosphors causing them to excite and release photons the visible spectrum according to the phosphor color. It's fast and offers the richest and most accurate colors. It is easier for plasma to deliver accurate colors because you are adding R + G + B. On an LCD TV it's more difficult because you start with White light, and you subtract the other colors with filters RGB - G - B to get red for example. So, LCD has un-true colors, and slow speed, and sucky contrast. I even compared the new Samsung LED backlit TV to an average samsung plasma TV and contrast is similair... but the colors on the samsung were off... especially reds tended to be washed out more.
I used to be an LCD owner and hated plasma for 10 years... I am just realizing now the panasonics have 100,000 hour panels. Damn... even if it is on 24 hours a day, it'll still last more than 11 years... and I in no way plan to have the TV longer than 6 years :-) Plasma has best picture... dollar to dollar... no more burn-in. I have the new panasonic TH50PZ750U plasma... and it's excellent. Love it much much more than the 46" Sharp LCD I had.
