Even money says there will be no US 3D release upon the 2D domestic release. Any takers?

I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get a region free 3d blu-ray player because this b.s. of not releasing 3d versions stateside is only going to get worse.

I haven't been keeping up, but is a region free 3D player necessary in order to play european Disney titles?

I thought that despite Disney's ignorance in shunning 3D releases for North America, they at least keep their foreign releases region free and playable on most machies.

You could tell them that our family buys a lot of their products, but have started to boycott them with the way they messed with the 3D availability for things like Lone Ranger, Oz, and Frozen ... and presumably Maleficent.

Lone Ranger was never exhibited in 3D.

I was kind of afraid of that when I said it. I know it didn't come out in 3D but wasn't it filmed in 3D?

Doesn't look like it. I believe a conversion was planned at one point.

With Frozen:
Please see the thread: Frozen 3D (US) Order Cancelled By Amazon

3D streaming in the USA only with a possible "tentative" October 3D-Blu-ray release.

There were issues/rumors around the Little Mermaid 3D release. There was strong indication they would delay/can it, possibly related to suspending the pattern of 3D theatrical re-releases. Then when the release was defective, they had a replacement program for the 2D only, leaving 3D buyers out of luck.

And to an extent they kind of jacked around with the 'Oz Great and Powerful' release too. If you bought the 3D release, then you had to also buy the 2D release. Later (too late for their dedicated collectors ) they launched a feeble solo disc fulfillment option.

After being a real leader in 3D blu-ray, Disney now seems to be treating it poorly.

It is annoying mate, but this one in particular i would imagine is region free. Aren't all Disney releases? You should be OK if it's just the Disney titles you need to import, baffling as it is that they're not releasing them in the US in 3D.
